Amos 6:1 Complacency

Secure with a rope

Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come! Amos 6:1

As people gain large bank accounts and retirement funds, they begin to feel very secure. They feel as if they have ‘made it’ and  are set for the rest of their life. It is what many strive for and dream of day after day. It gives them a peace of mind and they begin to rest in it, no longer having to work and fight for what they desire.

Hosea tells the people that when they are complacent and secure, there is problems coming. The leaders of Israel were acting in this way and were to see trouble.

Feeling secure is a desire of most people, both believers and non-believers. They want to ‘know’ that they have arrived and are successful.

It is common for many believers to begin to feel this way in their journey with God. Everything is going well and they begin to stop praying, stop reading God’s word, and stop praising and worshipping God. They begin to feel secure in where they are with God, rather than continuing to grow in line with God.

As this happens, many often begin to fall backwards. Sins begin to be allowed into their lives that had formally been avoided at all costs. They begin to no longer hear God’s voice or His Holy Spirit working in their lives, because they had ‘made it’.

This is complacency. It is being content with where one is at. It is a dangerous place to be. Once a person is there, it is easy for the enemy to take over. God does not like complacency. He wants a person to be hot or cold, not in the middle. No matter how far a person has come, there is still more room to grow more like Jesus.

Take a moment to look at your life. Have you become content with where you are in your walk with God? Do you feel as if you have ‘made it’?

Ask God where you need to grow and then begin to actively pursue God and His ways. Measure yourself up against Jesus and then begin to strive to become just like Him.

Do not allow yourself to become complacent and secure with where you are. It is a place of downfall and destruction.

I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will live more like Jesus every day; that you will walk more with God each day; that you will seek the things of God; and that your life will be a witness of who Jesus is.

Isaiah 1:4 Forsaking The Lord

Woe to the sinful nation, a people whose guilt is great, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him. Isaiah 1:4

It is easy to stand on the side and see the sins of others, and then blame them for the conditions of a nation. All over the nation there are many Christians who are pointing fingers at the sins of others. They often state that the nation has become a sinful nation because of others.

Although it is true that the nation has become very sinful in many different ways, one cannot just blame others for this occurrence. In reality it is a group effort to cause a whole nation to become sinful and turn away from God. It is a process of individual people slowly turning away from God.

Many believers will say that they have not turned away from God. The question is: how many times has a person turned down being the witness God called him to be?

A nation is made up of people, individual people. It is individuals who cause a nation as a whole to follow God or reject Him. It is individuals who choose to allow sin to occur. It is individuals who refuse to be a witness of who Jesus is.

When a believer chooses to not be a witness for Jesus, he is causing someone else or the nation to continue to live in sin and reject God. Every believer must give every non-believer a chance to know God and choose or reject Him. Often many will keep quiet and make the choice for the other person.

In this way, many believers have turned their backs on God. This is where Isaiah says woe to that nation and its people.

You have to take a look at your own life. How are you doing at being His witness from day-to-day?

Are you willing to tell others about Jesus every time you get the chance?

Or are you keeping silent and not wanting to offend anyone?

One causes sin to continue, while the other is doing God’s will on this earth.

Are you in partnership with this world in causing great sin?

I pray today that you will be God’s witness every chance you get; that you will keep yourself from all sin; that you will tell everyone about Jesus; and that you will not turn your back on God.

Revelation 8:13 Trouble to Come

“As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice: Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!” Revelation 8:13

Many people in the world are believing that things will get better on the earth. Often it is stated that if the government will just enact a few new rules it will make the country a better place to live in. If they just hire a few more policemen, the crime will go down. If they just enforce harsher punishment on crimes, the crime rate will drop. If a bad ruler is removed, things will get better.

Taking the Bible and God out of the picture, all these thoughts make sense to a point. If you were to take a serious look at the history of mankind, though, you will see that this is still not true. Things have never really become better for very long.

Some things will change for a short time. An example is some of the goodness that America has brought about as a growing country. Yet at the same time many things have become much worse. Yes, slavery was done away with, and women were given some rights, but, are now killing babies through abortion is easy and legal; deviant sexual lifestyles are acceptable; and many more bad things.

Right before this verse is a description started of some angels pouring out some of God’s wrath upon mankind. Fire is sent across the world destroying trees and grass. The sea is turned into blood killing many creatures in the sea. The lakes and rivers are turned into bitter water. The sun and moon are darkened.

These things were just from the first four angels. Now is stated that there is yet three more to come. It is prophesied of woe for all the inhabitants of the earth.

These are not signs of things getting better for man. Man does not get better in himself. Only through Jesus does things change. Only in Jesus does a person become a new creation. Without God you will only get worse.

In the end God will have His day of vengeance. Do not be deceived into thinking that things will get better on this earth. It will get worse until the day Jesus returns to take all believers to heaven with Him. Keep your eyes focused on Him, not this world. This world will be destroyed in the end. Jesus will not be destroyed.

I pray that today you will not be led wrong by this world; that you will keep your eyes on Jesus; that you will be a witness to the world of Jesus and what is to come; and that you will not fear the evil of the world but trust in God and in Him alone.
