The Forgotten Islands (book review)

This is the fourth book in a series by Bryan Webb that follows the adventures of Caleb and Anna Gristman as they go around the world with their parents on short-term mission’s trips. Looking back on my previous book reviews, you will be able to see the reviews on the previous three books. Bryan is a missionary to the Pacific region of the world and wrote these books for boys and girls to read and learn about mission’s work. Each book takes off from where the last one ended and also has references back to what occurred in the previous books.

The adventure that Caleb and Anna have this time takes them to the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Their parents go there in order to help build a house for one of the workers in the ministry there.

Caleb, like the average boy, likes to try new things out. After being encouraged to dive off of a large barge into the water from high up, he believes he can do anything. In the process of doing something (no spoiler), he falls and is seriously injured. This leaves him bed-ridden for most of the trip. Like most people, he is discouraged that he cannot do the things Anna gets to do.

However, Caleb learns that God can still use his mistakes and setbacks for His glory in reaching the lost for Jesus.

I highly recommend reading this book, even though it is geared for children. And it would be best to go back to the first in the series and work through all of them. I actually read this book out loud to one of my sons and he really enjoyed it and learned a lot about mission’s work, places in the world and following God. It is a short, easy read that tells a lot. I even learned some cultural things of those islands that I did not know about.

The previous books are:

MacKenzie’s Candle
The Street of Three Holes
Danger River
