“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people–for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” 1 Timothy 2:1-2
Paul had just pointed out how he had been saved by God’s grace. He encouraged everyone to hold on to that same faith. Now he is urging everyone to pray and give thanks for everyone and for a good reason.
The believers who pray usually will be praying for many people. However, most will not be giving thanks for all those same people they are praying for. Part of the “everyone” believers are to give thanks for is those who they don’t really like, those who are not good to believers.
It is interesting that he includes kings and those in authority. Everyone has someone over them that they do not really care for. They think the person is wrong or bad in their leadership. Very few people will give thanks to God for that person, yet, that is what Paul is saying.
God has placed every person in the position that they are in. They are there for a purpose. Pray and give thanks for that person.
The purpose of praying and giving thanks is so that you may live a peaceful, godly, holy life.
When others are not living for God around you, it makes it more difficult to live for God yourself. Leadership will make rules against believers if they do not follow God.
When you are praying and giving thanks for those in authority, God can work in their lives to change them. Your prayers and thanks can influence them to make better choices. It will also show the love of God to them, rather than hatred and anger.
Many believers show hatred to leaders who don’t follow God. This causes the enemy to rise up stronger against believers. The enemy cannot fight true love. True love breaks down anger and rebellion. God’s true love will be shown in how you pray and thank God for others.
Take time today to pray for everyone and remember to thank God for those people in your life. This way you may live the life God wants you to live and be the witness He wants you to be.
I pray today that you will have God’s love for everyone; that God will strengthen you to be thankful for everyone; that you will pray God’s desire for everyone; and that you will be a witness for Jesus.
