“One of the experts in the law answered him, Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.” Luke 11:45
Jesus was directly speaking to the Pharisees and other experts of the Law. He words were not very kind at all. They were very blunt and harsh words of rebuke.
He spoke on how they looked good on the outside, but were filthy inside. According to Jesus, they appeared to serve God, but was actually against Him.
This, of course, made some of them mad at Jesus. One decided to speak up about it. He directly told Jesus that when He said these things, He was insulting them. They felt that Jesus was just being mean by insulting them. They did not see what Jesus was really getting at.
The words that Jesus spoke were true. Yes, they were harsh, but stated to open the eyes of the Pharisees, teachers of the Law, and the people.
Many people do not like to hear some preachers speak, because they appear to be insulting or very harsh with them. The truth can be very harsh sometimes. Truth is factual with no other alternatives about it.
Truth will also often cut right down through to the bone. God’s Word is described as a two-edged sword that can cut very sharply. It will get to the meat of the matter. It will get past all the fluff.
God does love you. He also will speak loving words to you. But, God also loves you enough to speak the truth. He hates sin. He hates all sin, no matter how little or big it is. God can also see all the sins in your life. This means that no matter how good you look on the outside, He can still see the true inside of your heart.
When you are reading the Bible and something seems harsh and cuts you, listen to what God is saying. When you hear God speak through someone else and it insults you, ask God if it is true what is being spoken. Do not just be insulted, seek God in the matter. There may be some truth in what was said.
Allow God to work in your life and make you more like Jesus. Allow yourself to be changed. God does not insult just to be mean, He does it to get your attention back to Him.
I pray today that God will reveal areas you need to change in your life; that you will allow God to change your life; that you will seek God for the truth of your life; and that you will allow words spoken to draw you closer to God and more like Jesus.
