Timor Leste is a very young island nation. It gained its independence in 2002 from Indonesia. The population is made up of very young people, the youngest average of the Asian nations. As a young nation it struggles with extreme poverty, over half are in poverty, and learning to govern itself. Getting a good education is rare for most children, leading to many who cannot read or write.
Traditional spiritism continues to permeate throughout the nation and in the churches. Christianity is often viewed as a religion from Indonesia and thus rejected. Although many will claim to be believers, very few will live the life of a true Christian, being nominal at best. Christian organizations are often viewed with skepticism.
