2 Timothy 1:7 Don’t Be Timid

Sunset background

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7

The world often has the wrong view of what believers are like. They are often portrayed as weak, hateful and with no self-discipline.

The world thinks that believers are weak because they have to rely upon God, rather than on their own strength and power. Believers are often seen to be walked all over and ridiculed, so the world sees that as a sign of weakness. Some are weak, because they back down from standing true their beliefs.

Believers are often believed to be hateful, because of their speaking out against sin. Some, however, are hateful in the way they speak and how they treat those who sin. Many people have killed others in the name of God, showing hatred.

Others see believers with no self-discipline, because they see some do the very things that they speak against.

It is true that some believers have given Christianity a bad name by their words and actions. There are many who claim to be a follower of Jesus, yet, do not try to live like Him in any way. However, there are also many who are living for Christ in this world.

Those who do try to live for God, know what God has given them. God’s immense power has been given to believers to overcome sin, to turn away from temptations, and to stand true against the beliefs of this world. His infinite love has been given to every believer to love the enemy and to overlook the many wrongs done. His Holy Spirit has been given to the believer to guide him into making the right decisions with self-discipline.

The world will still not fully understand a believer, but the believer must not give the wrong view of who a believer is and who Jesus is.

God has given you everything that you need to live for Jesus, to live a holy life in this world. You do not have to be shy in what you believe, but stand strong and true to God’s word in your life. As you stand strong, do it in love and with self-discipline. Do not bring shame to the name of Christ in this world. The world is looking to bring you and Christ down. Don’t let them and don’t give them a reason, you have the power.

I pray today that you will know what God has given you; that you will know God’s power and love in your life; that you will show the world God’s power and love; and that you will stay true to God’s word in your life.

The Insanity Of God

Title: The Insanity Of God
Author: Nik Ripken with Gregg Lewis
Publisher: B & H Publishing Group
Date: 2013
Pages: 322

When the author became a believer in Jesus, he took the words of Jesus to go and make disciples literally. He proceeded to go to Somalia to work at bringing needed care to the people there during the mid-1980s into the 1990s. During that time, Somalia was under extreme warring amongst themselves. Very few organizations were willing to go into Somalia because of the extreme high level of danger.

After building a large relief organization and getting the attention of leaders of various nations, Nik started to question why there was so much struggle for the Somalians. He could not seem to build a large Christian group in the nation. He questioned why there was so much persecution and why God allowed such persecution.

He then chooses to travel around the world to various countries that were known to persecute believers. He wanted to interview various Christians on how they could survive under extreme persecution.

Nik writes of the many people that he encountered and what he saw and felt during those days. In the end he realized that Christians actually thrived and grew while under extreme persecution.

He does state that Nik is not his real name, nor are the names given in the book real. He changes the names of all the people and of  some of the nations to protect the identity of the believers in those nations.

This is an easy to read book that flows smoothly and steadily. At points you will want to cry for the torture that some of the people endured for the name of Jesus. At other times you will rejoice and be amazed to hear of the testimonies of the people who survived extreme persecution.

You will also be challenged in how do you live your life for God. God’s ways are not our ways and often do not make sense. This is where the insanity of God comes into the picture.

At one point he was asked if he thought persecution was coming to America. He stated, “Why would Satan bother with us when we are already accomplishing his goal? He will likely conclude it is better to let us sleep.” (page 211)

I encourage you to read this book and be challenged to be a witness for Jesus at all costs, so that all may have a chance to have eternal life in Jesus.

Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus

Title: Seeking Allah, Finding, Jesus
Author: Nabeel Qureshi
Publisher: Zondervan
Date: 2015

This is an autobiography by the author on his quest to find Allah. He grew with parents who were very devout Muslims in America. They felt their mission was to get more converts to Islam.

As a young child he had a few questions regarding his Islamic beliefs, but was always told to accept what he was told because the teachers knew best. As he became a teen-ager and a young adult he desired to get closer to Allah and know Him more.

While in college he met a person who became his best friend. This friend was a Christian. He was challenged to find out why he believed what he believed. The more he studied the Islamic beliefs, the more it did not make sense to him. Over time it led him to look to Jesus. Through a series of events and studies he gets to know Jesus as the Messiah.

This book goes into extreme detail in the Islamic belief. It also takes a very critical look at the Christian belief. He looks at many verses in both the Bible and the Koran. He uncovers what Islam really teaches and the core beliefs that have been held for centuries.

In it is also a strong challenge to Christian believers in their mission in this world and the belief in God.

I would highly recommend every believer to read this book. It will help you to understand why Muslims believe the way they do. It will also help to understand how Muslims view Jesus and Christians as a whole.

Parts of it will be a little dry, due to the extreme details being presented, but in the end it is worth reading.
