In Jesus’ Name (book review)

The author, Rick Dubose, is currently the assistant general superintendent of the Assemblies of God and is a great man of God, whom I have known for many years. Along with being senior pastor of churches, he has also been a sectional leader, district leader and now a national leader. He chose to write a book about the altars of prayer to encourage believers, specifically leaders of churches, to pray more.

Prior to writing this book, he had a vision of what prayers are and how they affect God and work in heaven. He clearly points out the connection between a person’s prayer and God’s move in the lives of people and nations.

For the prayers he looks at those as being done at an altar, not necessarily an altar found in a church building, but wherever one places one in one’s own life. There are five main types of altars of prayer that he describes that one must build before God: personal altar, core altar, community altar, miracle altar, salvation altar. Each of these altars builds upon the one before and encourages one to pray to God more and more.

The true purpose of God is shown to be to build His kingdom, for people to repent and become followers of Jesus–ultimately the salvation altar. Rick points out how one can work on establishing each of these altars and how difficult it will be to build and maintain. He encourages one to begin small and build up over time, a small altar is better than no altar, small prayers are better than no prayers.

Rick will challenge you to pray more and beyond just self prayers.

I highly encourage you to read this book, but not only read it, but begin to do what it says–to pray more. The more you pray, the more God can do in and through you. It is an easy read and short book, but packed with a lot of good, biblical foundations for prayer.
