The highway of the upright is to depart from evil; he who keeps his way preserves his soul. Proverbs 16:17
Driving down a highway can get very stressful at times, especially going through a major city. Through major cities there are often multiple major highways, each having many different exits and entrances and every one going to a different location. One has to pay close attention to the directions of each highway to stay on track to get to the desired location in the end. If one gets distracted, one may end up somewhere many miles off track.
Solomon states that the highway of the upright is to flee all evil and that the one who keeps his way will preserve his soul.
In the same way that there are many different highways going through major cities, there are many different highways in life. Each appear to be going towards a different location, though in reality there are only two destinations for all highways in life.
The most common highway in life is the one of self-pleasure. This can and will look different for each person. The common characteristic of the highway of self-pleasure is that it is leading one in sin and evil and ultimately leads to the destination of eternal punishment and death.
Believers are to take God’s highway that leads to eternal life. The highway of God is on a destination that will flee from all evil and sin.
Many people want to travel down a road and see how close to sin that they can get, without sinning. Just as traveling on highways through a major city, if one is not careful to stay on track and clearly away from the wrong highways, one will depart from the correct highway. In life it is stepping back into sin, rather than departing from sin.
Believers are to take God’s highway that leads to eternal life. The highway of God is on a destination that will flee from all evil and sin.
You are on a highway in this life. It is either the broad highway of this world leading to sin and death. Or it is the narrow highway leading to God. Focus your life and attention on taking God’s highway. Depart from all evil and sin. Jesus has removed all sin, so why go back to it?
Jesus paid for you sin and paved the way to God. Take that road and stay on it throughout your life. Allow God to preserve your soul for all eternity.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know the highway leading to life and God; that God will guide you in departing from all sin; that God will preserve your soul; and that God will give you strength to continue on His path.
