Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, Psalm 114:7
Standing before something or someone that can easily cause extreme harm will cause most people to tremble or shake out of fear. They understand the high possibility of danger that is present. People often shake when they have to go before their boss unexpectedly, especially when they do not know why they have to make that appearance. It is fear of the unknown possible negative consequences that could occur that was the cause for the required meeting.
The writer of this psalm tells the earth, or the people, to tremble at the presence of the Lord, the God of Jacob.
While the majority of the world do not believe in God, there are still many who believe that there is God, but not that He is the ultimate, all-powerful judging authority. It is common to hear people describe God as a God of love, that He would do no harm or punish anyone. God is seen as just a good buddy, or friend that one might have.
Those who have this view, do not think anything of living in sin on a daily basis. Sinning does not mean anything, because God is love and forgiving, regardless of the heart.
It is true that God is love and that He does forgive, but at the same time it is also true that God is judging and demands holiness in those who claim to follow Him. Without the work of Jesus, no one can stand before God without being judged and condemned for sin.
When standing before God, the believer ought to tremble before Him because of the sin in one’s life and seek His forgiveness, strength and power to live holy before Him.
God created you and everything else in this universe. He has all authority over you in every area of your life. Recognize who God really is and what power and authority He has over you. You do not have any right to stand before Him, deserving only punishment and death. Do not be flippant about God and His love, but tremble before His power and authority. Then be willing to repent of any sin and allow Jesus to remove that sin and fill you with His Holy Spirit to live a righteous and holy life before God.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know the power and authority of God; that you will see the holiness of God; that you will repent of any sin against God; and that you will seek God’s forgiveness of sin.
