Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. Luke 23:46
People sign contracts that commit themselves to someone else on a regular basis. They are committed to perform something or be dedicated to someone or some organization and will not back down without penalties.
While many will commit, many do not follow through on that commitment. When situations change and things get ugly or extremely difficult, many will renege on their commitment or agreement. Many find loopholes to get out of what they agreed to do.
As Jesus was being crucified on the cross, it came to the point of His dying. Right before He died, He committed His spirit to the Father, then died.
Any person who has become a true believer and follower of Jesus, has committed himself to God. He has agreed to allow God to have complete control over his body and soul, no matter what happens. It is trusting that God will take care of him in every situation, no matter how ugly the situation gets.
Even though many make this commitment, many will not completely follow through to the end with that agreement. Before actual physical death is at the door, many will renege on their commitment and deny Christ. They will take things into their own hands, rather than trusting God in the situation.
The believer is supposed to be trusting God with all of his heart, body and soul. This trust is to be in every situation, both good and bad, knowing that God will always do the right thing at the right time, even if it means physical death.
Those who are fully committing their spirit to God will be able to go to their death for Him.
You are already probably committed to different things, such as a job, a marriage, or certain bills. Just as you are committed to those things or more, ask yourself if you are committed to God.
Even more than being committed to God, are you willing to commit your life to God, no matter what it may cost?
Jesus put all of His life and death into the hands of God, rather than hold onto them Himself. Allow God to have all of you, to do as He is pleased to do, trusting and knowing that He will do what is best.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will be dedicated to serving God with your whole life; that you will trust God with your body and soul; and that you will know that God will only do what is best for you.
