2 Kings 2:9 What Do Others Want From You?

When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?” “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied. 2 Kings 2:9

Elisha had been faithful in following Elijah to the very end. As the final day of Elijah’s walk on this earth came, he asked Elisha if there was anything left that he wanted from him before he was taken away. Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit.

Some people know when their time on this earth is about to end. Sometimes it is during a sickness that the doctor has given no hope with. Other times it is when a person has been in a major accident and does not expect to live.

During these last moments of their life, people often try to finish any unfinished business in life. They will ask family or friends for forgiveness or give some last advice on how to live in this life. Other people will often ask last minute things from the dying person, desiring houses, money, positions, or other things the person has.

Elijah did not seek forgiveness, but wanted to know if Elisha needed or wanted anything more from him. His focus had been on doing God’s will and training Elisha to be God’s next prophet.

Elisha could have asked for fame, or power, or many other things, but he asked for the spirit that was in Elijah. He wanted God’s spirit upon him and in him.

Two things can be drawn from this. First, is that Elijah walked so closely to God, that Elisha and others knew it. God was flowing from him.

Second, Elisha wanted God’s Spirit to be upon him in the same way it was with Elijah. He knew that he was to become the next prophet and would need to know God directly.

If you were about to be taken from this life, what would others see in you or want from you?

Would they see that you walk closely with God and that God works in and through you?

Or would they just see hard work, money, fame, or other things centered on self?

Seek to know God personally. Seek to walk with God so closely that others see it and want to be a part of that walk. Allow God’s Spirit to work in and through you to the point that God shines in this dark world through you.

I pray today that you will know God in a very personal way; that God’s Spirit will be with you; that you will do only what God shows you to do; and that people will see God living in you.
