John 1:17 What Was Given

“For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” John 1:17

The people of Israel for several thousand years had looked up to Moses. He was the one who had brought the Law from God to the people. The Law was given by God to the people for a guideline on how to live for God. It was a rule book to be followed.

The Law covered everything in life, from personal sins to sickness, being single to be married then widowed, and everything else in between.

On the surface the Law looked like it was the best way to live. It was the best way to live, yet, no one could live that way. If a person broke one law he was guilty and punishable by death. No person could follow all of the laws.

The law was put in place by God for every person to realize that they need something more.

Jesus brought grace and truth. The truth was that no person could live up to the standards required by the Law. No one could live a perfect life. No one could be perfectly holy as the Law and God required.

The grace Jesus brought showed that God would make a way for a person to be holy for Him. The death and resurrection of Jesus provided that way. Repentance and belief in Jesus will result in His removing the sin in a person’s life. One can then put on the righteousness that Jesus provides.

God did not have to do this for you, but He chose to do so. This was God’s plan for you since the time He kicked Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden. God’s love for you is that great.

Many people try to live up to the standards of the Law in their own power. They try to be holy for God in order to earn the right to get into heaven. This should not be. You cannot earn the right. It is given by belief in Jesus and in Him alone. Only Jesus can provide the way.

Are you believing in Jesus? Or are you trying to earn your way into heaven?

I pray today that you will see what Jesus has provided for you; that you stop trying to earn your salvation; that you will rest in the grace and truth Jesus provides; that you will know the truth of Jesus; and that you will be a witness to that truth to all the world.
