Luke 10:41 Being Upset and Worried

“Martha, Martha, the Lord answered, you are worried and upset about many things” Luke 10:41

Mary and Martha were hosting Jesus and the disciples in their home. Martha was the good host in making sure everything was clean, cooked and looked great for their guests. While she was running about getting everything ready, Mary, her sister, sat at the feet of Jesus listening to Him and doing nothing. Martha was upset about this.

Not every person is great at being a host. Many do not even like to host parties in their own home. One of the main reasons why is because they must have the house perfectly clean, all the food perfectly prepared, and everything in its place. Doing all of this will take a lot of work.

When a people know they will be hosting a party at their home, they are often worried about being ready. Often it is the wife who is busy getting everything ready, while the husband sits and visits with the guests. As this happens the wife gets upset about his sitting down and not helping out.

This not only happens in hosting something at the home, it also happens everywhere else in life. People are worried about their children getting the best grades in school; getting that new promotion at work; getting the car repairs done; and much more.

As one person is worried, another looks at it with a care-free attitude of no worries. The first gets upset, because the other is “not concerned”. They seem to just not care.

In the next verse in this passage, Jesus tells Martha that Mary has chosen the best thing. That is to focus on Jesus and His words.

It is easy to get focused on what needs to be done and look away from Jesus. You may even be focused on doing things for Jesus, and forget to look to Him.

Do not be worried about the little things in life. Those things may appear huge today, but in light of eternity, they are very small. In fifty years, will you even remember that your car broke down yesterday? Will you remember that you hosted a party at home at the last minute? Probably not. Now imagine what you will remember in 10,000 years in heaven.

Focus on Jesus today. This does not mean ignore the things you need to do, but look at them in light of eternity. Don’t worry or complain about the little things today.

I pray today that God will reveal His words and plans for you; that you will see things in light of eternity; that you will choose what is best in life; and that God will guide you by His Holy Spirit in what to do.
