“But what about you? he asked. Who do you say I am?” Matthew 16:15
Jesus had just asked the disciples who the people say He is. They told Him that some think He is John the Baptist, others say Elijah or another prophet.
Jesus then asks them who they personally think Jesus is.
Even today the question is still asked of who Jesus was. Every year around Christmas and Easter, there are many news articles and talk shows about who Jesus was. Some are about whether Jesus really existed or not, many are about who He really was.
In reality very few people try to deny that Jesus ever existed. What is up for debate is who Jesus was.
Even Muslims, who are anti-Christians, believe that Jesus was a great prophet of God. Followers of Confucianism will even state that Jesus was a very wise person.
People everywhere usually agree that Jesus was a very good person and an excellent teacher. Just like in the days when Jesus walked on the earth, no one can bring about a true accusation against Jesus in which He as bad or acted in the wrong.
Now every one of these beliefs about Jesus are true. None of these thoughts can be denied, but Jesus is much more.
Peter answered Jesus calling Him the Son of God.
This is where most people in the world are different from a Christian. Even though Islam accepts Jesus as a great prophet, it does not accept Him as the Son of God.
To a believer Jesus must be the Son of God. He must also be Lord. The term ‘Lord’ is to mean the ruler or authority to be obeyed.
Along with His being Lord, Jesus is also the Savior. Jesus is the only one who can save you. You cannot be saved by your good works; or by the church; or by your money; or by your position; or by your knowledge. It is only in Jesus can you be saved.
You must have this view of Jesus today: that Jesus is the Son of God; the Savior; and the Lord of your life. Anything less than this and you are missing who Jesus is. Do not be like the world and make Jesus smaller than He is.
I pray today that God will reveal to you who Jesus is; that you will know Jesus more and more each day; that you will make Jesus Lord of your life; that Jesus will make you more and more like Him; and that you will reveal this revelation of Jesus to everyone you meet.
