“But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them–bringing swift destruction on themselves.” 2 Peter 2:1
Peter is talking about the false prophets in the Old Testament among the people of Israel. All the way throughout the Old Testament you can read about false prophets leading the people astray.
Some people try to state that there are not many false prophets today because you do not see people directly worshipping idols. Although it is not common in the USA for people to worship idols, they do worship many other things instead and in different ways.
Turn on the TV and you will see “Christian” preachers telling you that all you need to do is send some money to their ministry and pray and God will bless in financially making you wealthy. Others will preach that God accepts you living in sinful ways. Things that are directly called sin in the Bible is now often not called a sin.
Often the false teachers do not speak out with bold-faced heresies. They will speak some truth mixed with false statements. This makes them to appear as good and of God, but in reality they are false. Some have even gone so far as to state Jesus is not the only way to be saved, even though they claim to be Christian. Either way they speak, their false teachings will bring about destruction by God.
You need to be careful in what you are learning. Stay in God’s Word yourself. When you hear a teaching, double-check with the Bible if what is being said is true. Study all of God’s Word, not just a few verses or portions. Take the Word as a whole, not only in part. Ask God to guide you in correctly understanding His Word. Do not allow yourself to be led astray today.
I pray today that God will guide you in knowing His Word; that God will reveal the false prophets among you; that God will open your eyes to false teachings; that God will help you to teach His Word correctly; and that God will remove false prophets around you.
