2 Peter 2:19 False Freedom

“They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity–for ‘people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.” 2 Peter 2:19

Peter continues talking about the false prophets and what they are like. The previous verses talk about how they are cursed and walking the wrong path in life. Now he talks about their offering freedom.

In America, freedom is a highly treasured privilege. Every person loves his or her freedom to say and do what they desire. All around the country you hear about the rights of freedom of speech and action. Very common today is the freedom to live in a homosexual relationship with all rights given. For a long time there has been the fight of a woman’s right to have an abortion.

This country was founded on the principle of freedom. One of the great freedom’s fought for was freedom to worship God as you desire. Although this freedom is still in effect in our country it is slowly diminishing.

The world now wants a new type of freedom. They want freedom from religion. This is freedom from being held accountable for their actions. It is freedom from having to follow a correct set path.

Although it looks like freedom to be able to say and do whatever one desires, it really is not. This freedom is false. It is in all reality slavery. Each person is enslaved by the sinful acts he desires to do. People often talk about how they cannot help doing what they do or living like they do. There is some truth in this. They are slaves to sin.

Every person is born in sin. Only by accepting what Jesus has done for him a person can be set free from that sin. Only Jesus has the power to overcome sin. Only Jesus can break the hold of sin upon a person’s life.

Only you and God know what bondages you have in your life. Ask God to reveal what those bondages are. Ask God to help break those bondages. Live for God and live in real freedom. It may seem like bondage to live the conservative lifestyle that God desires, but it is only for your best. Following Jesus gives you the freedom to live life abundantly for God. Choose this freedom, not the false freedom of the world.

I pray that today God will guide you into living in His freedom; that God will break the bondage to sin in your life; that God will fill you with His Holy Spirit to have power over sin in your life; and that God will help you to live the true life of freedom in Jesus.
