Luke 22:46 Are You Sleeping?

“Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” Luke 22:46

Sleep is one thing that many people really like and desire more of. When a person is sleeping, he is at rest and all of the problems of the world appear to disappear. Once in a deep sleep, one will often forget about the challenges of the day.

People will even take drugs to help them fall asleep to get away from the stress they are under. Facing the problems is rejected for the peaceful sleep in a world of dreams.

As Jesus was preparing to be crucified He went into a garden to pray with some of His disciples. He asked them to pray. When they fell asleep, He told them they need to pray to keep from falling into temptation.

Just as the world desires to sleep away the problems of their day, many in the church get weary and have gone to sleep. Instead of praying for strength to overcome temptation, they turn the other way and go to sleep. In their drowsiness many turn to and accept sin as a normal part of their lives.

Whole churches have fallen asleep, rejecting God’s word and allowing sin to be actively practiced and promoted inside the church. They have fallen into the temptation presented for them.

Both individual believers and churches are living in a way that does not set them separate from the world, but a part of the world.

Every believer needs to be awake and alert in prayer, keeping watch out for the evil temptations of Satan in their lives. Their prayers need to be ones of asking God for wisdom, direction and strength to accomplish His will–to be like Jesus.

As you examine your life, does it show that you have fallen asleep and allowed sin into your life? Any sin that you have chosen to accept as normal is against God.

God is right there with you, giving you His Holy Spirit to strengthen and guide you in His ways. He does not want you to fail and fall into temptation and makes a way out of it every time. However to overcome temptation, you must be willing to stay awake and pray to know how to overcome it.

Are you awake and praying? Or are you asleep?

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will be awake and alert to the evil ways of this world; that you will pray as Jesus prayed; that you will be guided by God’s Holy Spirit to flee all temptation.

Mark 4:38 Don’t You Care?

Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” Mark 4:38

The actions or inactions of people are often interpreted to show how much they care or don’t care for others. If a person does nothing at all when another is going through a hard time, it is usually interpreted as if he does not care.

With this type of automatic interpretation, it refuses to know or understand the reasoning behind the refusal to act in the situation. There may be greater knowledge known by the one who ‘could’ help, but does not.

Jesus and the disciples had gotten into a boat to go to the other side of the lake. Jesus then went to sleep. As a severe storm came, the disciples woke Him in fear wondering if He did not care for them.

God, being the creator of everything and in complete control, will often tell His follower to go forward into what appears to be dangerous and deadly. Walking with God will, at times, appear to be life threatening.

As finite, not really in control, human beings, many will be afraid when danger arises before them that threatens their life or well-being. Immediately many are like the disciples crying out to God, asking if He really cares about them. They often feel as if God has sent them forward to their death.

Believers need to know that when God sends them forward on a path, it is for a purpose. Most often, He will bring them through to the other side. If He does not, the reality is that they will arrive on the other side stepping into eternity in heaven.

God really does care and the believer is on the winning side every time. Walking with God, he cannot lose.

As you walk your journey with God, there will be times that danger is in the path. Trust that God knows about it and has a purpose for it. Trust that God will bring you through it in the best way for you.

Do not allow thoughts of questioning how much God cares for you to enter your mind, bringing on doubts and fear.

If God cared for you enough to send His Son to die for you, He will care for you enough to bring you through whatever is in your path He has you on.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will trust God with all of your life; that you will trust God in dangerous situations; that you will continue to walk the path God has for you; and that you will know God’s presence in times of danger.

Song Of Solomon 5:3 Being Available

I have taken off my robe–must I put it on again? I have washed my feet–must I soil them again? Song Of Solomon 5:3

In this passage, the bride has gone to bed. Her lover has shown up to see her. She does not want to get up, get dressed and go out to see him. She does care for him, but is too tired to want to do anything more. Later in this chapter she decides to get up and go to the door. By the time she gets there, he has left and she can no longer find him.

During the night when one is sleeping, it is easy to want to refuse to get up for anyone, for nearly any reason. Everyone wants to get their own beauty sleep. It takes time and effort to get up and become presentable, just to answer the door in the middle of the night.

The problem with refusing to answer the door, is that one may miss an important opportunity or person. Once that person leaves, he may never return again or it may be a long time for him to return.

God works the same way in a person’s life. There are times God knocks on the door of a person’s heart for a reason in the middle of the night. This is not just for salvation, but for God to want to use the person. He may be waking up the person to have him intercede in prayer for someone in need.

In your own life, God has plans for you. There are times when He wants you to do something when it is not convenient or fun. It could be during the day or during the night.

As you follow Jesus, you must be available during these times. God may have a word for you, or a word for someone else. He may have a miracle in store for you, or, again, for someone else.

If you choose to ignore His call in your life, you may miss out on His move and big plans for you. Do not allow yourself to ignore God when He stirs your heart to do something. You are here to serve Him, not just yourself, so you must always be available to do His will.

Be willing to get up and get dirty for God today.

I pray today that you will hear God’s voice at all times; that you will be willing to serve God at all times; that you will be available to do His work; and that you will not ignore God’s knock in your life.

Psalm 4:8 Sleep In Peace

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8

Throughout his life David had many troubles. For many years he was always on the run, trying to stay away from someone out to kill him. King Saul was the first that was set to kill him. Later, some of his own children wanted David dead. Through all of it, David was at peace at night when he laid down. He trusted God’s protection for his life.

Loosing sleep over events in a person’s life is a common occurrence. Some people lose sleep because they are workaholics. They push and push their work, striving for absolute perfection or attainment of everything. As this occurs, many will lose a lot of sleep to gain what they want.

Many other people will lose sleep out of fear of something in their life. The reasons for the fear could be many. Some is fear of failure, others are fear of rejection, or loss of something or someone, a bill past due, a break down of a vehicle, a sickness in the body. Fear of the unknown is common among many people.

Fear plays a major role in the lives of most people. Look at the level of security systems that people put in their houses and businesses. They are put in because of the fear of someone attempting to rob their house or business.

David knew where his real security was found. It was not in the things made by man, or by man alone. His security was found in God. He knew that God, alone had absolute control of everything. Nothing could happen in his life without God allowing it. David was not constantly looking over his shoulder all night in fear. He would sleep in peace.

As a believer, you have God on your side. He loves you more than anyone else could possibly love you. Despite the problems in your life, you can sleep in peace, because His perfect love casts out fear that tries to rise up in your life.

You can rest assured that God will not allow anything to happen in your life that is not a part of His plan for your life. Rest in peace that He gives. Remember that Jesus is your Prince of Peace.

I pray today that you will know the peace God brings you; that you will not fear this world; that you will sleep in God’s peace and presence; and that you will give God’s peace to others.
