Mark 13:35-36 Watch, Don’t Sleep

Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming–in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning–lest, coming suddenly, he finds you sleeping. Mark 13:35-36

There are people who watch the skies all the time for the weather. Often, they are farmers, but there are many others also watching. These people watch to be ready for storms that may be coming. They can see all the signs of what is about to come and get themselves and others prepared for possible damage.

Mark records Jesus talking about the end times. Jesus tells the disciples to watch because they do not know when the master is returning, morning, noon or night and they do not want to be found sleeping.

Anyone on a job does not want to be caught sleeping. They are supposed to be awake and doing their work faithfully. While at work, the workers keep an eye out for their boss to be ready for when the boss returns.

The world is living life as though there is no care in the world or any future beyond the moment. No one can see nor really cares about tomorrow. They cannot see the danger coming, so they are asleep.

Many believers are in the same category as the world, asleep. They are not watching for the return of Jesus. They are caught up in self and day-to-day living, rather than living for Christ.

A day is coming in which Jesus will return to judge all. His judgement will be whether a person obeyed His word or not. Believers who are sleeping are those who are not doing what God has commanded them to do. One must be awake and doing God’s will or else that one will be cast out.

There have probably been times in which you were awake and watching for something to happen or arrive. You were anxious about something about to occur, whether good or bad. One of the things you need to be alert and watching for is the return of Jesus. Do not allow yourself to get caught up in selfish needs and the moment, but stay awake and alert, watching for His return.

Always be awake and ready and doing His will so that you will be ready, and He can call you a good and faithful servant.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will be awake to do God’s will; that you will be watching for the return of Jesus; that you will be ready for His return; and that God will not find you sleeping.
