Numbers 15:39 Reminders

“You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember all the commands of the LORD, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves by chasing after the lusts of your own hearts and eyes.” Numbers 15:39

God had given the Israelites some instructions about their clothing. One of the things they had to do was hang tassels with a blue cord off the corners of their garments. The whole purpose of these tassels was to remind the people of His commands to them. As they remembered His commands, it was to keep them from sinning. Their focus was to be on the commands of God at all times.

In life it is very easy to get distracted and begin to sin. People will start to follow things or ways of this world that does not fall in line with God’s commands. Most of the time these changes come in very subtly, barely noticeable at first, until the person is fully won over. Other times it is a bold change of direction that comes quickly in the heat of a moment.

Satan and the world want you to forget about what God has said. Although today you are no longer living under the law, there are many commands that God has given that still need to be followed.

Most people forget things very quickly. They might remember them in the back of their mind if they stop to think about it, but that does not usually happen.

Just as God wanted the Israelites to have a reminder about His commands, you must also keep a reminder in your life. It can be different for each person. Taping note cards in various places you will see with verses on them; keeping worship music playing always; wearing a Christian hat or shirt; or wear a button or some other item with a reminder. Find a way that will work for you.

Do not allow yourself to lose focus on what God wants of you. Remind yourself daily and throughout each day of His commands to you. Do not allow yourself to fall into sin because you forgot His commands.

I pray today that God will help you remember His ways; that you will not walk away from God in any area of your life; that your eyes will always be on Jesus; and that you will be the light of Jesus in this world.

Genesis 35:7 Creating Reminders

“There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel, because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.” Genesis 35:7

When Jacob found out his brother Esau was going to be meeting him, he was scared. He had deceived Esau of his birthright and blessings. Now he expected Esau to kill him. The night before there were to meet God came down and dealt with him. Jacob fought with God until He blessed him. God changed his name to Israel.

Now some time later, Israel was back at that same place. He builds an altar there in memory of what God had done to and for him. He remembered that it was there that God had revealed Himself to him.

As a person goes through life, they have many different events that happen. One of the most common ways to remember what had happened was through the taking of pictures. People take pictures to remember the joy someone had, the beauty of some place, or for many other reasons. All of them are to remember something.

When God did something great for a person in the Old Testament, it was common for that person to build an altar to God. It was a reminder to themselves and to others that God had done something for them. Later people would ask why the altar was there, and it could be said because God did something and then tell what it was.

There will be times when God does something great in your life. When He does this do not rely only on your memory to remember what He had done. Set up little reminders.

Many people write in a journal their experiences. Other ways may be to set little notes up on your walls with what happened and when. Or purchase some little object that will remind you of that event.

However you choose to remember what God did, do it. Do it for when times get rough. Do it to have something to tell others about when they ask about that object. Use it to be His witness.

In any event, do not forget what God has done for you.

I pray today that you will see what God has done and is doing for you; that you will remember what God has done for you; that you will set up reminders of what God has done for you; and that you will be able to use what God has done to be a witness to others.

2 Peter 1:12 A Good Reminder

“So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have.” 2 Peter 1:12

Peter had just finished telling the people to live godly, productive life. They were to continue to make sure their salvation was sure. Living like this meant they had to stay away from sin and grow in love towards God and others. If they kept their focus on these things they would enter heaven some day. Now he tells them he reminded them of these things, even though they already knew it.

People need to be reminded of things on a regular basis. It is easy to forget things in the busyness of life. Life gets a person busy doing many different things. There are so many things to remember: pay the bills, get to work on time, plan the supper meal, clean the house, put gas in the car, get groceries, empty the trash, go to a child’s event, and the list goes on and on.

How many times do you forget little things throughout the day? At the end of the day as you go to bed, suddenly you remember you forgot to do something earlier that day.

There are many things used to remind people of what needs to be done. Planning calendars, notebooks, little sticky notes, ring reminders on the phone, and other ways of reminding. This needs to be done because people forget very quickly.

Think about how many billions of dollars are spent every year on advertisement on television trying to remind people of products. This needs to be done to keep the sales up.

As a believer you may know all the basics of following Jesus. You may know more advanced thoughts on Jesus and God’s Word. You know that you should stay away from sin and live in love. Yet, how many times do you forget these little things and step out of God’s will and into sin?

Create daily reminders, or even hourly, to keep your focus on Jesus and His Word. Constantly remind yourself to live for God in His way. Do not let yourself forget what Jesus has done for you and in you. Someday we will be able to meet in heaven if we continue to live for God today.

I pray today that God will remind you of all He has done for you; that you will remember all the Words God has given you; that God will help you keep your focus on Him; and that you will not forget why you are following Jesus.
