Hosea 8:2-4 A False Acknowledgement of God

Israel cries out to me, ‘Our God, we acknowledge you!’ But Israel has rejected what is good; an enemy will pursue him. They set up kings without my consent; they choose princes without my approval. With their silver and gold they make idols for themselves to their own destruction. Hosea 8:2-4

Israel claimed to acknowledge God and serve Him, yet they rejected His ways. They chose to do their own thing and made idols to worship and follow. All these things led to their destruction.

America for many years, as a nation, claimed to know God and claimed to be under God’s supervision. Over the years more and more people have turned their backs on God. Only recently does the nation as a whole claim that it is no longer a nation under God. The views and actions of the nation as a whole reject God and His ways. They are choosing to worship idols and do their own thing.

Nations are made up of people, so it is the people who guide how the nation as a whole does things. It is the people who choose whether to follow God or not. It is people who allow the leaders to choose to follow God or not.

Each week there are churches filled with people who claim to acknowledge God. They claim to be believers. Yet, in their day-to-day routines, they reject God and refuse to follow His ways. They choose to be rebellious, arrogant, proud, hateful, sinful, drunk, immoral, liars, and any other sin out there, just as the world does. If one was to look at them and the world, he would see nothing different between them.

Claiming to acknowledge God is easy, it is just using a few words to say something. Living that life acknowledging God is different. It requires action to follow the words. It requires a turning away from sin. It requires loving the enemy. It requires being different than the world.

Only you, can know whether you acknowledge God in truth or lies. Where is your heart when it comes to acknowledging God? Is it just something to do because it looks or sounds good? Or are you truly living your life for God?

Seek to know God and follow Him with all of your life, not just in words. Be separate from this world, though in it.

I pray today that you will follow God with all of your heart; that you will not be ashamed of Jesus in this world; that you will reject sin and follow God’s ways; and that you will be a witness of Jesus to this world.

Hosea 7:10 Being Arrogant

Israel’s arrogance testifies against him, but despite all this  he does not return to the LORD his God or search for him. Hosea 7:10

Israel was God’s chosen people. God had personally selected them to be His people and to reveal Himself to the world through them. Since they were God’s chosen people, the people felt that they were extra special and could do whatever they wanted. They felt that they were the best and above all wrong, regardless of what they did. In this process they refused to turn to God or even search for Him.

Being labeled as arrogant is not a term that most people would want to be given. It is a term that is negative in its connotation. Being called arrogant means one is very stuck on himself and thinks that he is the best or better than anyone else. A lot of times people say an arrogant person has his nose stuck up in the air, because he is looking down on everyone else.

Over the years there have been many different famous people who were very arrogant in their words. Sports players, movie stars, singers, and politicians have been labeled or seen as very arrogant. Yet, many of these same people have fallen down and crushed. Often because of someone better than them, others because of some crime that they committed. They feel as though they are so good, that they can do no wrong or will be let off the hook on it.

Sadly, this same type of arrogance occurs in the church, just as it did with Israel. Leaders in the church feel as though they are the best. Individuals in the church carry the label of “Christian” and feel as though they can do no wrong at all.

Many believers have some success in their life, then suddenly stop seeking God, because they feel as though it was all their own work. They become very arrogant.

Take a look at your own life. Who gave you the ability to do what you do? Who opened the doors to allow you to do what you do?

It was not you who gave you all these things, it was God. As you go through your day, each day, seek God and what He wants. Do not allow yourself to think that you did it on your own or that you are the best. Let God have all that glory.

I pray today that you will seek God with all of your heart; that you will allow God to work through you; and that you will know it is by God’s power that you are here.

Hosea 6:3 Press In To Acknowledge The Lord

Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth. Hosea 6:3

Israel was unfaithful to God and had forsaken Him by following after many different idols. God chose to punish them, by placing them into exile under the control of other nations. Hosea is putting out a call to the people to turn back to God and acknowledge Him.

Despite the punishment, God was ready to revive them and restore them. His prophecy looks forward to the time of Jesus dying on the cross, then raising from the dead to restore them. It was going to come, just like the rains come and they were to look forward to it.

As the rains stops for a time and the ground dries up, it appears as though God has forgotten His people. There are cracks in the ground and the crops are not growing. It appears as though they are completely rejected. Yet, the rains will come again in the right time.

When there are many troubles and people have turned away from God, it is difficult for many people to be willing to acknowledge God. They feel that because of all the troubles, God is not in control and they seek their help from somewhere else, other gods.

Yet, God is always working on behalf of all people. His goal is to revive everyone to live for Him and have a full life. There will come a time when He will appear in the life of a believer and bring relief, just like the rains bring relief to the ground. Just as one can trust that the rains will come to water the ground, one can trust Jesus will return and be there.

Acknowledge that God knows what is best for your life. Acknowledge that He is the King and the One who is in control. Push to let others know this information. Allow God to be first in every area of your life. As that happens, God will come near to you. He will show Himself in and through you.

Acknowledge God today, so that He will be able to acknowledge you when Jesus returns.

I pray today that you will know God personally; that you will acknowledge God in all that you do; that you will know God’s presence; and that God will revive you to a full life with Him.

Hosea 4:12 Consulting Idols

My people consult a wooden idol, and a diviner’s rod speaks to them. A spirit of prostitution leads them astray; they are unfaithful to their God. Hosea 4:12

During the time of Hosea, many of the people turned to wooden idols to seeking out guidance for their lives. They would use diviner’s rods to tell them the path that they must take. Even though they were originally called to be God’s people, they prostituted themselves out to others and were unfaithful to God.

Seeking out guidance from idols has not changed over the years. People everywhere are always seeking guidance for their lives. The methods of seeking are very diverse, but most do not include seeking God’s direction for their lives.

Following the lifestyles of famous actors, singers and sports players is one of the most common idols sought out. Most of these people are not living their lives for God at all, they are living for self and the world. People seek them out to know what to wear, how to speak, how to be famous, how to be wealthy, how to be the best in their field, what to believe, and how to live their lives.

These people are worshipped as being the best and knowing the best way to live. They appear to have everything under control. They appear to be living a full life. Yet, they are dead idols, worshipping false gods. Those who follow them are prostituting themselves against God.

Many believers and churches have fallen for the deception of following these and many other idols. Their first choice in seeking guidance is not God, but those of this world, those who do not seek God first, but themselves and the ways of this world.

Every believer must put God first in his life. When there is some guidance that is needed, he must be willing to seek God first for the answer, rather than the false idols of this world.

When you are seeking guidance for something, what is the first thing you do? Turn to this world and search for answers on Google? Or do you turn to the Bible and prayer, seeking out what God’s answer is for you?

Do not allow yourself to be caught up in the deception of this world, prostituting yourself to the idols of this world and rejecting God. Consult God for what you need guidance in.

I pray today that you will put God first in your life; that you will consult God for all your needs; that God will strengthen you to reject the ways of this world; and that you will be faithful to God.

Hosea 3:1 Love As God Loves

The LORD said to me, “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress. Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.” Hosea 3:1

Hosea’s wife had been unfaithful to him and went off to be with other men. God tells him to accept her back and still love her. He takes it even further with telling Hosea to love her in the same way that He loved the Israelites, who had chosen to follow other gods.

Marriage is one area that people will often talk about unfaithfulness. One spouse becomes unsatisfied with the other and goes out seeking where that one can find love from another. As that occurs, anger and revenge usually builds up, the relationship is often destroyed and trust is lost. The spouse that was faithful, usually tell the other one that the marriage is over and will not be loved again.

People in the church are often guilty of this same unfaithfulness to God and to others. Loyal friends stab a friend in the back, striving to look better or raise higher. Hurting gossip is spread, damaging a person’s reputation or life. Turning the back on a friend in need. Telling lies behind a person’s back.

Each of these things and many more can happen, causing great pain and anger. Most people will reject a person who has done this, and refuse to have anything to do with that person. There is no forgiveness or love shown, because of the pain and anger.

Yet, God tells His people to love as He loved. God loved so much that He sent His Son to die for a people who rejected Him and did not want Him. He loved you before you even knew about Him or accepted Him.

God also loved you when you rejected Him. Think of the times when you went against God and followed this world or your own ways. Even then, God still loved you.

In this same way, you must be willing to love those who have hurt you and rejected you. Show God’s eternal perfect love to everyone around you, not just those who are faithful. It is through this love that others can learn of God’s true love. Love as God loves you.

I pray today that you will know God’s love for you and others; that you will show God’s love to others; that you will trust God in the pain others put you through; and that you will be His witness to this dying and hurting world.

Hosea 2:7 Chasing False Love

She will chase after her lovers but not catch them; she will look for them but not find them. Then she will say, ‘I will go back to my husband as at first, for then I was better off than now.’ Hosea 2:7

Hosea’s wife was representative of the nation of Israel and Hosea represented God to the nation of Israel. She would chase after other lovers, refusing to stay loyal to her husband. He loved her regardless of what she had done wrong. For a time she would chase after other lovers, but never be able to catch them or be satisfied. Eventually she will return to her husband realizing what she had in him.

All over there are marriages that are breaking up because of one spouse searching for love in other people. They refuse to stay faithful to their spouse. The other spouse often gives up on them and gets a divorce because of their unfaithfulness.

There are people who have started to follow Jesus and go to church every week, read the Bible and appear to grow in Him. It appears to be going good, until they look back at the ways of this world and get lured in by it. They see, what appears to be the good life, in the world and begin to follow it. This is a prostitution against God, going after other lovers.

As a person chases after these other false loves, usually they cannot catch them. Chasing after fame, fortune, satisfaction, fulfillment and life, when not chasing after God, will always leave a person empty and catching nothing.

Some of these people will realize what they had in the beginning and turn back to God. They will turn from the false loves back to the one true love.

If you are one of those who have turned their back on God and chased after false loves, you need to know that God is the only one who has the perfect true love for you. He loved you before this earth was formed, before time began. He provided life for you for all eternity.

Stop chasing afer the false loves that this world is trying to offer. They will leave you empty and dead. Chase after God, He is the perfect one for you and loves you more than any other. He is always there waiting for you.

I pray today that you will know God’s love for you; that you will be faithful to God; that you will know God’s faithfulness to you; and that God will strengthen you to stop chasing the false loves of this world.

Hosea 1:8-9 Called Not His People

After she had weaned Lo-Ruhamah, Gomer had another son. Then the LORD said, “Call him Lo-Ammi (which means “not my people”), for you are not my people, and I am not your God.” Hosea 1:8-9

God had Hosea marry a woman who was a prostitute to point out the sin of Israel. The nation had prostituted themselves against God. Her second child to be born was called L0-Ammi by God. With giving this name God was telling the people that they were not His people anymore and He was no longer their God.

The people of Israel had been chosen by God and were always considered His people, His nation. However, when the people had chosen to follow idols and reject God, He turned His back on them. God rejected them as His people for a time.

Most people would be willing to say that they reject the idea of prostitution and would not have any part of it. Yet, they are doing the very same thing with God on a daily basis. Churches have many people who attend just to look good or to do their weekly duty. They are not there to serve and worship God.

During the week, their hearts and minds are on anything but God. They are running hard after the things of this world. They are serving themselves and the gods of this world, lust, passion, greed, selfishness, pride, fame, fortune, and much more. On Sundays they may claim to be a believer, but their hearts are far from it.

Israel had been living in this same way, and so God had rejected them, for a time. He refused to call them His people because they had turned away from Him.

If you call God your God, then you must serve and worship Him alone. You cannot allow yourself to run after other gods and put God on the side. God will not share Himself with another god of any type.

Be willing to reject the gods of this world so that you may serve the one true God. Do not live your life in a way, in which God will have to say that you are not His child or people. Jesus made a way for you, do not reject Him in your day-to-day living. Worship Him and serve Him seven days a week.

I pray today that you will serve and worship God alone; that God will be able to say you are His child; that you will not be rejected by God; and that you will be His witness in this world.
