The Courage of Nikolai (book review)

Lamplighter Publishing takes old, out of print books and reprints and publishes them. This is one of the books they have done this with. It was originally written printed in 1884 by Mary E. Ropes in Russia. She was a Russian, who moved to London and wrote stories about Russian life.

Nikolai is a servant in the household of Dimitri Romanovitch Roukassoff in Russia. He goes by the name of Collia. While living there, an English woman, Mary, comes there to help, who is also a nurse and a Christian. Mary gives Collia a copy of the bible to read and encourages him to read it.

When a young girl gets sick, Collia is sent to get the doctor. On the way to the doctor is able to save a man from serious harm. This man is a prince and takes Collia in to be his servant.

Without giving away the story line, Collia goes through a lot of struggles, but keeps his newfound faith in Christ.

Mary E Ropes, the author, wrote this story for younger people. At the end of the book, she states that this story was based off of a real story and hopes it will touch the hearts of people for God.

This is a short and fairly easy book to read. It does use a lot of old English words and some Russian words. Lamplighter has chosen to define various words that are not common English words or ones that are Russian.

I do recommend reading this book. It will encourage one to put trust in God, even in the worst of circumstances and challenge one to serve with a whole heart.
