Patriots (book review)
A novel of survival in the coming collapse
James Wesley, Rawles, the author is a former Army Intelligence Officer that also runs a blog on survival and survival skills. He originally started to write this book around 1990 but had to redo a lot of it when 9/11 occurred. James said that the structure of America had changed dramatically after 9/11.
In this novel, a group of men and women from across the nation had seen that eventually America would collapse. They got together and started prepping for that event. They built up skills that would help them survive and gathered food and materials for their survival.
The story opens as America collapses into chaos and loss of all electricity and government. The group gets together in the mountains at a house that is set up for survival. Over time groups of violent raiders try to kill them, but unsuccessfully. The government is taken over by the United Nations and put under extreme harsh dictatorship.
Each of the main characters are Christian believers and often quote scriptures and pray about various situations. James does a great job at going into extreme details on what the people did to survive. Often the characters mention books on survival that are real books in real life. At times his attention to detail is almost too much and can get a bit boring to read. He is able to talk about many different types of weapons, medical procedures and food preservation with accurate detail.
There is not a lot of bad language, but there is some on occasion. There is a lot of killing, some is described in graphic details. While there is a lot of killing, very often there is mercy and forgiveness shown.
If you are interested in survival during the collapse of America and what they may look like, this is a book to read. I will not reveal what the ending is and who survives or does not survive. I will say that it does come to an end fairly abruptly, but with a good understanding of what was going on and how it comes to an end in the end.
