Through the Elephant Grass (book review)

This book is the continuing adventures of two missionary children, Caleb and Anna Gristman. Bryan Webb, the author and a missionary, wrote four books previously to this one on these adventures. Caleb and Anna’s parents travel around the world to help missionaries for a short time.

Their adventure this time takes them to the country of Mozambique. His father helps a missionary with building water wells for the people in a very strong Muslim area of the country. As they build, one of the workers is able to talk to the people in their language and tell them stories from the Bible as a witness.

Caleb learns to trust God when things do not appear to be going as planned. Anna learns how to trust God and be brave in doing what God has put in her path when she is afraid.

Although this book, along with the others in this series, are written specifically for children, it is an interesting read for adults. I personally read this book out loud with one of my boys and he loved it. It gives one some insight into missionary’s lives and the culture of the country they are in. It is also a simple, easy short read.

Although this story is made up, it is inspired by real life experiences of the author in his many years on the mission’s field around the world. I do highly recommend reading this book to learn and be encouraged in the Lord.
