What’s So Great About America (book review)
The author, Dinesh D’Souza was a man born in India who came to America and became an American citizen in 1991. Coming from India, Dinesh sees how great America is compared to his home nation and many other nations. Taken into context, this book was written a year after the 9-11 bombings in New York City. With the bombings, Dinesh chose to ask the question of what is so great about America.
He clearly points out that there are many in the academic circles that are stating that America is very bad, has a very bad history and was founded upon bad principles. In each of these views, Dinesh points out the facts of some of the truth in those statements and what is false in those statements. He admits that there are faults in America and that America has made some major mistakes over time, but has also did some great things.
Around the world, and in America, many hold that colonialism was completely bad and was just a takeover of other nations. Using many different examples, the author is able to show how, in the end, colonialism helped many nations grow in various ways.
One of the greatest faults he sees, and many in the world see, is that America has a great moral decline. It is shown that with freedom, there is the option of choosing good or evil. The evil comes along with the good, a price to pay for freedom. According to Dinesh, Islam sees that freedom as an evil and needs to be controlled by a government ruled by Allah. The Muslim goal is to destroy that freedom and bring control across the world.
I do recommend reading this book. However, keep in mind that it is not written with a strong Christian worldview, though Dinesh is Christian. There is a lot of truth in what he writes that cannot be denied. I would be interested in what he thinks today, over twenty years later, in what America has become and how Islam has influenced America.
