Robinson Crusoe (book review)

Daniel Defoe writes this story in first person format. It begins with a man named Robison Crusoe, who desires to travel the world by boat against his father’s advice. Even though the first several attempts ended in disaster, he continues to travel the world by boat.

During one travel, the boat is shipwrecked in a storm and only he survives on a deserted island. With a lot of determination and ignoring God, he begins life on that island and thrives, though all alone. Over time, he meets and becomes friends with a native from another island. Through many challenges and dangers and after many years, Robinson is eventually able to leave the island and get back to his home.

One of the things that stood out as great in this book is that each chapter begins with a Bible verse. Throughout the story, Robinson talks about how he ignored God and His word for much of his life. At one point, he sees God’s hand upon his life and gives God the credit for everything that was occurring, both good and bad. In one point, he lays out the whole gospel message in great detail as a witness to someone.

One thing interesting is that it ends on an open ending. Robinson says he will tell his later story at another time.

I highly recommend reading this book. It will challenge one to look at the providence of God in one’s life. It also challenges one to look past the challenges in life and to overcome them by God’s grace and power. Troubles will come, but God can help one get through them, no matter how great they are.
