Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. 3 John 1:2
Prosperity is something that everyone is always seeking to have. Having a large bank account, large house and a new fancy car with no debt is the dream of many people. Some will do whatever it takes to gain that type of prosperity. As they do this, many will allow their heart and soul to do things that are not right. While the physical life is prospering, their soul is withering away.
John opens his last letter to the people with a prayer that they would be in good health and prosper just as their soul is prospering.
Having physical things is an outward sign that gives the appearance that someone is prospering. One has everything that others just dream of but never receive. Although having things and good health can be good, they are only temporary.
Many wealthy people are broken on the inside. They are still searching for meaning and purpose in life. Depression can set in and damage the lives of many. This is due to the fact that although they have all the physical things desired their soul is still dead without Christ.
The first priority in the life of anyone should be to know Christ, be cleansed of sin by Him and given life. Once a person has a purified life that person can also begin to handle the physical wealth of this world in the correct manner. The body then can be healthy because it has no fears or worries as one trusts in God for everything.
Having everything without Christ is failure. Having Christ with or without anything is success. A soul prospering in Christ is true life and prosperity.
Whether you have a lot or little, good health or poor health, the important thing in your life is your walk with Christ. Walking with Christ purifies your life and removes all sin, giving you an abundant and prosperous life that the world cannot steal. As you grow in Christ Jesus may God fill your life with the blessings of good health and an abundance of all that you need and desire. Do not allow your soul to become sick and die as you seek the prosperity of this world, but seek Christ first.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will seek Christ first in every area of your life; that your heart will be prosperous in the things of God; and that God will bless you with the physical things of this world as you seek Him first.
