But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. 2 Timothy 2:16
Voices are heard no matter where a person goes or looks. They are heard on the television, radio, internet, movies, music and in person. Every voice that is speaking has something to say and are promoting a viewpoint. Some are pushing very clearly and distinctly their views, while others are subtly and slyly promoting some agenda. Choices have to be made as to what one will listen to or refuse to listen to.
Paul talks to Timothy about how workers can do right or wrong. He tells him to avoid profane and idle talks because they will only increase in ungodliness.
Hearing people talk in music, movies, books or nearly anything else may always seem innocent. It is usually seen as just entertainment, a moment for a person to just relax and enjoy something that is not the current trouble of the day.
On the surface it appears to be innocent and just fun, but underneath the surface, there is often an agenda being pushed. Satan is a deceiver and is pushing to get people to believe lies and reject God’s truth. From things made for little toddlers to full adult movies, the world is pushing to reject God and His word and to participate in sinful ways.
Much of this has crept into the church. False doctrines and idle complaining and grumbling occur.
Listening to these types of discussions only leads to more sin and ungodliness. They pull one away from God’s truth and gives reason to sin more.
Believers are to shun or run away from and avoid these types of talks. Their minds are to be filled with the things of God, not the lies and deception of this fallen world.
All around you each day many things are being said. The majority of those voices are being profane and idle, of no value. The world is trying to deceive you and lead you into more sin and away from God and His truth. Flee those talks. Turn to God’s word and His truth. Seek those who will speak truth and be a witness to those who are pushing lies. Unlike the world walking in more and more ungodliness, be holy as He is holy. Spread the message of the gospel to the world that is not profane nor idle.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will open your eyes to idle babblings occurring around you; that you will focus your ears upon God’s truth; that you will speak God’s truth; and that you will aim for more Godliness in your life.
