Education: Does God have an Opinion? (book review)

Education is something that is often hotly debated. States are trying to decide if parents can choose to homeschool or not, and if they do, what guidelines should there be or not. Parents are also trying to decide whether to homeschool or public school their children. Many Christian parents are wondering if God says anything about education in the Bible.

Israel Wayne chooses to try and answer this question by looking at what public schooling is and does and what the Bible says about schooling. The book is set in two parts.

The first part looks at what the purpose of education is. Once that is set up, he then looks at government schooling is. He very clearly shows how government schooling is not really education, but a forcing of a secular philosophy on the children to deny God and their parents. Children are not taught to think, but only to repeat what they are told, whether it is true or false.

Once this is set, then Israel looks at both Christian schools and homeschooling. He points out that just because something has the name of “Christian” on it does not necessarily mean it is Christian. Parents have to seriously look at all the different curriculums used in both private Christian schools and homeschool curriculums.

In the second section of the book Israel looks at the different core subjects and what the Bible has to say about each and what public schools teach in each. Some of the subjects he looks at are: logic, philosophy, math, arts, language arts, social studies, science, literature, history and government.

He points out that believers must have a foundation in God’s standards. The world does not have a set standard and thus causes great confusion and death. Every subject can be founded in the Bible. The public schools are founded upon Marxist, socialist principals to control all thinking, destroy the family and control everyone under a dictatorship.

All throughout this book Israel uses many scriptures to back his thoughts on education. He encourages parents to be the leaders in their children’s education and not abdicate that responsibility to the state.

As a homeschool parent of over 20 years and a former worker in a public school system, I highly recommend reading this book. I have personally seen the corruption in a public school and this in a relatively conservative area. And this corruption has become much worse in the years since I left the public school system. This is especially recommended if you have children in a public school or if you are considering homeschooling or not.
