Christianity and Wokeness (book review)
The author, Owen Strachan, has chosen to take a look at the social justice movement and how it is attacking the Gospel of Jesus Christ and look at ways to stop it. Although the term woke has been around for a few decades, it has not become a common household term until around 2021. People have become “woke” on many different social issues and are striving to change social issues.
He begins the book at looking at what being woke is and how it has entered the culture of America. Owen uses the words of many who are woke in how he describes what being woke is. This has begun in the colleges teaching students how to be woke. Once this started, people would go out of college ‘woke’ and begin to teach others spreading wokeism across the nation.
He takes time to clearly describe what Critical Race Theory teaches and how it is evil in being woke. It divides people as oppressed and oppressor, just as Socialism does.
Since that time, many churches have begun to be ‘woke’. He quotes from five major “Christian” leaders of major churches who have bought into being woke.
Once it is shown how wokeism has entered the church, he takes a look at being woke under the Old Testament beliefs and then again under the New Testament. In various ways he looks at what is believed and how it goes against God and His word. Being woke denies the changing power of the blood of Jesus. It denies the need for salvation.
After this he presents various hard questions that people may have about American history and answers them. One of those questions is: Is it true that Christian Churches were all pro-slavery in past days? Another good question he answers is: Is there a “Black way of thinking” and a “White Way of thinking?
Throughout the book there are many different quotes and he gives where the quote can be found. It is very logically set out in order and presents the gospel message. This book will open the eyes of many as to who is woke and the terms of being woke that are being used. It clearly shows how being woke is against the Gospel message and is damaging to America.
I highly recommend reading this book. It is written at a higher level of reading, but is packed full of information.
