He will not be afraid of evil tidings; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. Psalm 112:7
Fear is something that the world preys upon and promotes. It is often what drives up sales and gets people to change their ways or believe things that are not necessarily true or right. Many people are controlled by the use of fear of something evil or horrible that could happen, though most likely will not occur. With the constant changing of views on various cultural aspects, the one thing steady in this world is being afraid or what is bad.
The writer of this psalm is talking about the person who delights in the Lord. That person will not be afraid of any evil things because his heart is steadfast as he trusts in the Lord.
Watching the news can cause a lot of fear in one’s heart or mind. There is a constant barrage of evil news being broadcast. People killing others, wars, violence, diseases, thefts, and much more.
The world does not have a solid foundation to stand upon. There is nothing that is truly good and no way to really overcome the evil that is occurring on a daily basis.
Believers can easily get caught up in the fear. One sees the evil rising and threats of greater evil on a regular basis. If all one sees is what the world is showing, then there is a reason to fear.
Instead of looking at the ways of the world and hearing what is going on, a believer must put all of the focus upon God. One’s heart needs to have a solid foundation of trust in the Lord. God is in control, no matter how evil things get or what evil reports one hears, and will win the battle in the end.
You are not immune from hearing of the evil in this fallen world. There are also probably threats of bad or evil things that could occur that you hear about all the time. Do not allow your heart to be afraid, but put your trust in God. Make God and His word the solid foundation on which your heart and life stands. God is able to overcome all evil and bring you through anything and everything, no matter how horrible it may be. You have eternal life waiting for you some day, trust that God will bring it to pass.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will put your trust in God; that God will help you to remove all fear of evil reports; that your heart will be steadfast in God’s word; and that you will have the peace of God in your heart and mind.
