The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18
It is common for people to believe that they can make it alone, that they do not need others for help. People want to feel as if they are in control and can do what is needed on their own.
Children begin this belief with pushing parents away when attempting to try something new. Teens reject the advice of parents. Adults reject help out of selfish pride.
After making the earth and everything in it, God made man. He realized that man was alone, and it was not good, so He made a helper for him.
Although this scripture is looking specifically at marriage, it can be applied in many areas of life, but it starts with marriage. A marriage partner is (or should be) the closest person to anyone.
The spouse should be able to understand and know the other spouse more intimately than anyone else. Knowing someone this way allows for that person to help out in any way needed.
Often people in marriage are in it for themselves, rather than for their spouse. They are not there to help build the other one up, but to be built up.
In this same way, people need others to help them out in nearly every area of life. And in the same way, many are in friendships with others for selfish reasons, rather than to help the other person.
Jesus wants every believer to love and serve others. One person may be serving another, while another one yet serves the first one. This is the help that every one needs in their different times of need. No one should be alone, but a part of God’s community loving and serving each other.
You may or may not be married. Either way, there will be many times that you will need help from others. Allow God to use others to help you.
If you are single, seek God to show you the one who should be your helpmate in marriage, the one who can know you intimately and help you the best. This can build you up in your walk with God and with accomplishing tasks in life in general.
You are not a lone island, who is there to help you on your path with God?
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will seek God’s direction to who can help you in this life; that you will seek God’s direction in who you can help; and that God will place people in your life that will point you to Jesus and build you up in God and His word.
