They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ Revelation 18:14
Wealth and luxury are the things that the majority of the world strive to get. For many it is seen as a status of having succeeded successfully at something and have all that one needs. The more things that a person has, the more successful he is in the eyes of many.
Losing everything that one has is seen as a disgrace. Those who have lost everything are often asked what did they do that was wrong.
In his vision, John describes Babylon, a former wealthy and successful place, as being destroyed. All their luxury and splendor are gone forever.
There is nothing wrong with having great wealth. However, many make their great wealth and luxury their god, rather than just something they have and use.
All throughout the world people strive to gain more and more wealth. Dreams of large mansions and fancy cars are on the minds of many, though for most, completely out of reach. Feelings that once a person has all these things, he will be set for life, with no worries or cares left.
Much of the wealth and luxury that the world enjoys is built upon sinful practices that go against God. Along with being sinful, will also bring on many worries and concerns.
Every piece of luxury will someday be destroyed, either with wear and tear or by someone else. In the end God will destroy the luxury of this world in judgment against sin. Nothing will last the test of time, except the human soul.
Rather than chase after the things of this world, one must seek God. He must pursue the things that will bring eternal life and last for eternity.
Regardless of how much you have or how little you have, there is always more things out there. All of those things are only temporary and will be gone some day. God will destroy all the things of this world in the end.
Do not seek the things of sin of this world but put your focus and attention on the things of God. Build up the kingdom of God so that your reward will be great with eternal things when you step into heaven when God calls you home. Live for God, not self-pleasure.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will seek the things of God in your life; that God will strengthen you to resist the false luxury of this world; that God will guide you in fleeing from all sin; and that you will know the value and reward of following Jesus.
