They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ Revelation 18:14
Wealth and luxury are the things that the majority of the world strive to get. For many it is seen as a status of having succeeded successfully at something and have all that one needs. The more things that a person has, the more successful he is in the eyes of many.
Losing everything that one has is seen as a disgrace. Those who have lost everything are often asked what did they do that was wrong.
In his vision, John describes Babylon, a former wealthy and successful place, as being destroyed. All their luxury and splendor are gone forever.
There is nothing wrong with having great wealth. However, many make their great wealth and luxury their god, rather than just something they have and use.
All throughout the world people strive to gain more and more wealth. Dreams of large mansions and fancy cars are on the minds of many, though for most, completely out of reach. Feelings that once a person has all these things, he will be set for life, with no worries or cares left.
Much of the wealth and luxury that the world enjoys is built upon sinful practices that go against God. Along with being sinful, will also bring on many worries and concerns.
Every piece of luxury will someday be destroyed, either with wear and tear or by someone else. In the end God will destroy the luxury of this world in judgment against sin. Nothing will last the test of time, except the human soul.
Rather than chase after the things of this world, one must seek God. He must pursue the things that will bring eternal life and last for eternity.
Regardless of how much you have or how little you have, there is always more things out there. All of those things are only temporary and will be gone some day. God will destroy all the things of this world in the end.
Do not seek the things of sin of this world but put your focus and attention on the things of God. Build up the kingdom of God so that your reward will be great with eternal things when you step into heaven when God calls you home. Live for God, not self-pleasure.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will seek the things of God in your life; that God will strengthen you to resist the false luxury of this world; that God will guide you in fleeing from all sin; and that you will know the value and reward of following Jesus.
Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 2 Peter 3:11
One common thought among many people around the world is to eat, drink and be merry today because tomorrow you will die. Most people will only live for the moment with no regard or thoughts about tomorrow and even less about eternity.
Worldly “successful” people are those who kept in mind their goal for their future each day. They focused on doing something today with tomorrow in mind. However, most do not give a moment’s thought about eternity.
Peter just described how God would destroy the world in the end. With that in mind he asks what kind of people they should be. He tells them that they should live holy and godly lives.
One thing that should set the believer apart from the rest of the world is that he has a focus upon eternity, not just the here and now. In order to have life in that eternity, one must also have his focus upon God.
God has given the directions on how to live life in order to get life for eternity. The process is simple–live a holy and godly life. In other words do what God has said to do.
The first step in this is accepting what Jesus had done on the cross. Doing this wipes away all wrongs. Then one must put on the righteousness of Jesus, not his own. And finally, do what God calls him to do. Doing these three things will cause a person live a holy and godly life.
Too many in the church believe in Christ, but refuse to live a holy life. They want the best of both worlds and in the end will lose everything.
Only you can examine your life closely and determine how you are living your life from the inside out. Fruit will bear witness as to whether you are striving to live the holy life God called you to live or not.
Although it may be painful right now to live a holy life, in the end you will gain eternity.
Live your life for God with the gift of eternity that He has promised you. Allow His Holy Spirit to strengthen and guide you in how to live that life. Be set apart knowing that Jesus is returning to bring you to heaven for eternity.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will live as God has called you to live; that your life will be a holy life, separated unto God; that the world will see that you live for God; and that you will hear the Holy Spirit guiding your thoughts, words and actions.
“Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord. Obadiah 1:4
Many people and nations have risen up in power and glory. Some have been known as great, while others were known as tyrants and horrible. Power and authority is the dream of many people and nations. The more they can get the happier they are.
Some of these nations and people appear to be great enough or powerful enough to last forever. It does not appear as though anything can take them down or destroy them.
God had been watching Edom and saw that Edom had risen in power and glory. They were soaring high and shining great as a nation. However, they had chosen to go against God. He warns Edom that He will bring them down.
There are currently some nations, such as America, that appear to be so great and powerful that it appears as if nothing can break them down. Among the nations of the world they are soaring high in power, authority and glory.
While America is a great and powerful nation and full of self pride, however, it can be broken and God will break it down if she chooses to not follow Him. God is going through and shaking the nations now with a disease that appears to be out of control. The economy and social life are coming to a crashing halt. People and businesses are being destroyed. The church is being shaken.
Every person has to choose whom they will serve. They have to choose if they will serve self and this world or if they will serve God. It is the people who make up the nations and it is the believers who preserve the people and the nations. Every believer must choose to live for God.
You may have been very successful in some area of your life. Do not allow the pride and glory of that success to overcome you. Remind yourself that it was God who gave you the success you enjoy.
Do not put yourself up so high that God must bring you back down. The world tries to live without God and tries to soar in the heights, but will be brought down by God.
Live to serve and worship God and God alone. Do not give God a reason to destroy you or knock you down. Give Him all authority in your life.
I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will serve God alone; that you will give God control of your whole life; and that you will be a witness of Jesus to this world.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. Isaiah 43:2
One thing that is guaranteed in this life on earth is trouble. Every person has struggles and challenges in life. Sometimes it is a daily occurrence, while other times it is just on occasion.
The greatest challenge during times of trouble is that one often feels alone and that he is about to be destroyed. There often does not appear to be any way to really survive the situation and no one is there to help. It looks like the end of the world is near for the person.
Isaiah quotes God in saying that He is with the person when going through various troubles and challenges. As one is going through those problems, he will not be hurt or destroyed.
At the point that Adam and Eve had sinned and were kicked out of the garden of Eden, there has been troubles in this life on earth. Satan is fighting to keep every person away from God or to turn away from Him.
In some of these struggles of life it is if the person is going through a physical fire or a raging river. There does not appear to be any way to survive the trouble.
While the world gives into the trouble and discouragement, the believer can have a hope to survive. Jesus had promised that there would be troubles, but God also promised to be with the believer.
It may be painful and scary as one is going through a raging flood of problems, but he can know that God is right there with him holding his hand and guiding him. God will bring the believer through the situation to salvation on the other side.
God is with you also. You do not need to fear the troubles or what may be the outcome.
The most that these troubles can do is destroy your body. They cannot destroy your soul, the most important thing. God has your soul in His hand. Trust Him to hold on to it and bring you through the struggles.
Most of these troubles will not destroy your body, but only be an inconvenience for a time. God will use those troubles to build you and move you forward in Him. These troubles will pass away.
I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will know God is by your side; that you will know that God is holding you; and that God will save you in the end if you continue to trust Him.
