May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance. 2 Thessalonians 3:5
The world is very quick to tell people to follow their own hearts. It is proclaimed that one can do what one wants with no real consequences, as long as it does not directly or physically harm someone else.
With this type of belief of following one’s own heart, the desires of the heart change on a regular basis. There is no real standard to follow. People get confused and disappointed when things do not work out the way their heart desires, and then they quit.
Closing the second letter to the Thessalonian church, Paul prays that God would direct their hearts in His love and Christ’s perseverance.
Love that is most commonly seen is a love that is all about pleasure and pleasing self in the moment. It does not hold on in love when things go wrong or bad, but runs away to love something or someone else very quickly. It rejects commitment to love, regardless of what happens.
God’s love is one that is perfect and permanent. He loves every one, regardless of what they have done or not done. It is because of that love, that He sent Jesus to die and pay for the sins of every person.
Jesus, then living with that love in His heart, was also able to persevere under the most trying of circumstances and not give up.
When people did not believe, He kept speaking and teaching. When people rejected Him, He kept reaching out. When going through extreme torture, He kept going through with the plan to save all people. He persevered.
Believers need to have that same love and perseverance. There will be struggles and extreme pain at times, but one should never give up and quit, knowing that there is hope and life in the end.
As a believer, you will have people that will hate you and be harsh upon you. Life will throw all types of problems your way, making it very difficult. Instead of being angry at the people or circumstances, put on God’s love.
Allow God to direct your heart in His perfect and eternal love. As your heart is filled with His perfect love, you will then be able to persevere under the most challenging of circumstances in your life. You will not have to give up or give in to the pressures and troubles of life.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know the love God has for you and all people; that you will know and have the perseverance of Jesus; that you will allow God to direct your heart and life; and that you will know the hope you have in Jesus.
