On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.” John 7:37
One of the things a person cannot live without is water, especially on a hot day. People need water to survive. They cannot go more than a few days without having any water at all.
When a person gets thirsty, he desires to have that thirst quenched with a glass of nice, cold water. Yet, even warm water will meet the need of extreme thirst.
While at a festival, Jesus called out to the people for anyone who was thirsty to come and drink from Him.
Even though drinking water can be deeply satisfying at times, it is only temporary and one will be thirsty again very soon. Water satisfies a temporary physical thirst.
Many people are thirsting for more of something in this life. They are seeking purpose and meaning to life. They desire comfort and strength for living. The things and ways of this fallen world will bring some of this for a short time. Sin always brings pleasure, but only for a moment. In the end it brings about death.
Those who go to Jesus and drink in His teaching, love, grace, mercy, and salvation, have their eternal thirst met. This is a thirst of the soul, that the things and ways of this world cannot meet or quench.
Instead of seeking relief from pain and suffering in the things of this world, one needs to look to Jesus. He must drink in the teaching Jesus taught. Once a person drinks in the Holy Spirit that Jesus gives, he will know eternal peace, comfort, strength and life.
Jesus brings eternal life to a person, not a temporary feeling.
There will be times you are thirsty for more. While it easy to cover up that thirst with the things of this world, they will not fully satisfy for long.
Get into God’s word and drink in what He has to say. Drink in the Holy Spirit that Jesus offers. Drink in the refreshing forgiveness given to you. Begin to know the eternal life God has for you starting today.
As you begin to drink in what God offers, you will begin to know satisfaction, peace and strength beyond anything that this world has to offer. Are you drinking today?
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will drink in God’s Holy Spirit sent to you; that you will take in the forgiveness Jesus offers you; and that you will know the eternal satisfaction in following Jesus.
