Hebrews 5:7 Ultimate Submission

“During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.” Hebrews 5:7

When a person reads about Jesus in the Bible it can look like everything was easy for Him, except the time of the crucifixion. He went around speaking and doing miracles. When the authorities came and tried to oppose Him, He quickly quieted them down and left. The part about it being His custom to get up early to pray and when He prayed in the garden is often forgotten.

The author of Hebrews states that these prayers were “fervent cries and tears” going up to His Father. What does it mean to be “fervent cries and tears”?

These are passionate, strong prayers. These are cries from the depths of the heart. It is not just a simple thirty-second prayer, or a simple asking God to help in something. It is one being in deep agony over something. It is crying out desperately to God to meet a need or to give guidance in a situation. It was total trust and submission to His Father.

God heard His prayers because they were ones of total submission to His desire. Jesus knew He had to trust and obey His Father completely or all would be lost.

It is easy for you to ask God for something. It is different to be passionate about it and to completely submit to God’s answer. Jesus prayed that His Father’s desire be done, not His own.

When you are praying, whose desire are you wanting done? Are your desires lined up with God’s?

God heard every prayer of Jesus and answered them, because Jesus submitted to every desire that God had. Jesus bowed down to His Father.

Take time today to be fervent in your prayers. Be passionate about what you are seeking from God. Then submit all of your desires to His will. Trust that God will do what is best for you. At that point God will hear your prayers and answer them.

I pray today that you will passionately seek God’s desires; that you will submit to anything God wants; that you will totally trust God in every area of your life; and that God will work in and through you to accomplish His desires.
