2 Timothy 1:6 Fan The Flame

“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.” 2 Timothy 1:6

Paul is reminding Timothy something he evidently was told to do before. He had received the gift from God and was told to fan it into flame. No one knows for sure what this gift was exactly, since Paul does not name it, but at a minimum it is the gift of life, forgiveness, and being a witness.

Every person who is a believer in Jesus and follows Him, will have these gifts. There is a probability that each person will have another gift also.

This gift will start out as just a small spark. It could be your being saved in your bedroom all alone at night when God gets a hold of your heart. There is no big fan-fare or notice of it, yet it is still a new spark in your life.

Once this happens it must be fanned into a full flame of light for God in this world. A spark does not show much light and if it is not fanned or fed, it will go out.

Get into God’s Word and study it, memorize it, know it. This will feed that flame in your life. Along with the Word, pray. Communicate with God daily and throughout the day. This will also feed that flame.

Once that flame is started, then you must use it. Go out and tell others about the life God has given you. Do the ministry God has led you to do. No, you may not be in a titled position of pastor, or elder, or missionary, but you have the ministry of spreading the gospel wherever you are.

You have a gift that God has given you to reach others in some way. For one person it may be feeding, another may be helping, another listening, or many other ways of touching people’s lives.

Allow the flame of God’s love for you to shine in and through you to others. Let that flame rise to a roaring flame the burns bright in this world. Allow God’s Holy Spirit to fan that flame in you to reach the world for Jesus.

I pray today that God will reveal His gift to you; that God will show you the talents He has given you; that you will allow the Holy Spirit to build that flame; and that you will be a shining flame of God’s light in this world.
