“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” Romans 8:18
Paul had just finished talking about every believer being a co-heir with Christ Jesus. A co-heir is one who will inherit everything alongside of someone else. The main thing that a believer will inherit is His glory. Then he points out that all the suffering a person may be going through is not worth comparing to the glory we will have.
When a person is going through any type of suffering, it always seems like the world has crashed down around them. Everything has failed and that there is no hope. It feels like nothing could be worse.
Yet, here you are being told that all those sufferings are not even worth comparing to what God has in store for you. Imagine the glory that God must have! He created everything that you see (and don’t see). As you look around the world, there are many things that are full of glory in nature, that are fabulously beautiful. If those things are so beautiful here in this fallen, sinful world, how much more beautiful are they in heaven?
If those things are glorious here, how much more glorious is the God who made them all?
Now, remember that he said that you are co-heirs with Christ and will inherit all of His glory also someday. The sufferings you may be going through are just temporary. They will only last a short time…even if they last your entire life, in light of eternity.
Everything that happens in this life is to point you towards Jesus and to make you more like Him. This includes that horrible suffering that you are going through. Yet, when you hold those sufferings up against the glory of God and what you inherit in Jesus, they are really nothing at all. It is like comparing apples to oranges, it should not be done since they are completely different types of fruit.
Look forward to the joy that God will give you some day when you fully inherit all that God has and is. Look forward to when you will be completely like Jesus. Do not just look at the here and now present sufferings. Find joy in what is to come. Allow God to prepare you for your inheritance some day.
I pray today that you will know the glory of God more; that God will give you strength in your time of suffering; that you will not complain of your suffering; that God will use you to touch others for Jesus; and that God will bring you through all suffering.
