Luke 1:50 Extended Mercy

“His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.” Luke 1:50

Mary was pregnant with Jesus. She went to see Elizabeth, who was pregnant with John. Elizabeth realized that the baby Mary was carrying was a child of God, the coming Savior, and calls her blessed.

Mary then rejoices in God for what He has done. Part of her praising God is that she notices that God pours out mercy on any person who fears Him.

Notice that God’s mercy is not on every person. It is only on those who fear Him.

This fear is not the being scared of God. It is a deep respect for who He is and what He can do. God is the one in control and has absolute rule.

Many people do not recognize this fact of God. Even many Christians do not really fear God. He is often looked at as the Old Man Up There, rather than the Creator, King, Ruler, and the One Who Can Save and Destroy.

Others just look at God as the one to whom they run when in trouble, otherwise they do not really need Him.

When Mary was told she would be pregnant outside of wedlock with the child of God, she did not understand it. All Mary did was accept it. She feared God. She respected God’s control and choices.

When a believer respects God, He pours out His mercy on that person. God gives a believer His favor. Every person messes up, and God has the right to destroy that person. The price of sin is death.

As you fear and respect God’s rule He will pour out His mercy on you. God will forgive you and give you His favor. He will pour out His wisdom into your life. He will answer your prayers.

Do you fear God today? Do you respect His authority?

I pray today that God will reveal more of Himself to you; that you will have the proper fear and respect for Him; that you will allow God to have absolute authority over your life; that you will make God King of your life; and that God will show His mercy towards you.
