“Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. You of little faith, he said, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:31
This passage is the famous passage about Jesus and Peter walking on the water. Peter was in a boat and saw someone walking on the water that they thought was a ghost. Jesus said not to be afraid and that it was just Himself. Peter states that if it is really Jesus, he wanted Jesus to call him to walk on the water to him. Jesus calls him, and immediately, Peter gets out and starts walking on the water.
As he was walking, Peter sees the waves and gets scared and starts to sink. This is where this verse picks up.
Think about this for a moment. Peter has no fear of getting out of the boat and then is actually walking on water, which is impossible to do for man.
It is only when he sees the waves that he starts to doubt. Up to that point he had faith in Jesus that he could walk on the water. Jesus cannot understand why he started to doubt. Everything was going perfect, why start doubting?
Now think about your own life. You are following Jesus. Everything is going perfect. God is providing for all of your needs. It is easy to believe.
Now, all of a sudden, you see the waves of life starting to rise up: sickness, bills, pain, suffering, death and more. You begin to doubt that Jesus is really in control. You take your eyes off of Jesus and place them on those large waves in life.
At that point you start to doubt and begin to sink. Jesus will ask that same question: why do you doubt?
If Jesus is taking care of you during the good times, don’t you think He will take care of you during the rough times? God does not love you any less during the rough times in life. His love remains the same.
God will care for you through everything in life. Keep your eyes on Jesus at all times in all situations. Trust God through everything. Do not doubt.
I pray today that God will reveal His love to you; that God will reveal how He will care for you; that you will trust God in every situation; that you will not have any doubt in God at all; and that God will reveal His presence with you more and more.
