“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
It has already been shown that everyone has sin in their lives. John just finished stating that if one claims he is without sin is a living in deception and has no truth in him. Now comes the question of what to do about those sins.
John tells you to confess your sins. This means to admit that you have sinned and what you have done to sin. Each person knows what he has done that is wrong. Many people try to cover it up or play it off as not important, but God does not want that.
You are to admit your sins to God. Remember that God already knows what you have done wrong, nothing is hidden from Him. The purpose for confessing your sins is so that God can forgive you and cleanse you from sin.
Jesus came for the purpose to save everyone from their sins. He loves to forgive and cleanse you from your sins. It is one of His great joys to do so. It fulfills His purpose for coming to the earth and dying on the cross.
John now tells you that He (God) is faithful and just to forgive you of your sins. He is faithful in that you can count on Him to forgive you. He will not let you down.
God is also just to forgive you also. This is that by following God’s character and His own rules He has to forgive you. He must forgive because He is a God of love.
Not only does God forgive you of your sins, He also purifies you from your sins. This wipes those sins out. In wiping out the sins, there is not even the remembrance of them.
All of this information is to give you peace and joy. It tells you that you can be forgiven and cleansed of sin. Many people have a hard time believing that God will forgive them. This is false. Nothing you do is so bad that if you confess God will not forgive you.
It also gives you peace knowing that God does not remember all those past sins you had done once you have confessed them.
I pray that today you will confess all of your sins to God; that God will give you His peace that you have been forgiven and cleansed; that you will see God’s faithfulness; and that God will make you more like Jesus everyday.
