“Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer.” Hebrews 8:3
When you read the books of Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy you will see many rules and regulations about offerings and sacrifices. These were a part of the Old Testament Law. Every high priest had to know and understand all these rules and had to make sure he offered the correct offering or sacrifice at the correct time and in the correct manner.
Here the author is talking about Jesus, as the High Priest, must also have something to offer. Jesus laid His body down for a sacrifice for all the sins of every man. His death would remove all sin, not just cover it up as the animal sacrifices did.
His gift was both His body and His life. Jesus offered His life as a gift to God to use as needed for His kingdom. Everything He said and did was for the building of God’s kingdom. Jesus put God first in His life.
Today we as believers must also bring offerings and sacrifices to God. Our sacrifice is not to remove sins or to atone for them. They are sacrificing of our lives and desires to do the will of God in every area of our life. Sacrificing our thoughts, actions, and will for God’s use.
I pray that today you will offer your life as a sacrifice to God to build His kingdom; that you will offer your life as a gift to God to use as He desires; that God will give you the strength to make the choices needed to be made; and God will reveal to you how you can serve Him best in this life.
