“And he says in another place, ‘You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.'” Hebrews 5:6
Prior to this statement the writer talks about how a person is only a high priest when God calls him to that position. Anyone who calls himself a high priest without God’s direct call is false. In this passage he states that God called Jesus a priest in the order of Melchizedek.
What does this mean to be in the order of Melchizedek? Abraham had brought tithes to Melchizedek long before Moses and the law was put into place to bring tithe. This tells us that Jesus is before the law, even though physically He was born nearly 2,000 years after Moses. His High Priest position was set up outside the Law that Moses brought to the people. Jesus came to fulfill the law, not to abolish it. He was set up to do so even prior to the law being in affect. One difference between Melchizedek and Jesus is that Jesus’ High Priesthood is forever. Melchizedek eventually died and no one else followed his priesthood till Jesus came along.
The good news with Jesus being the High Priest forever is that He is our High Priest even today. And unlike any high priest in a church, Jesus is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Jesus also knows everything about us, including our thoughts and motives. Since He knows all of this and everything else He also knows best how to help us in our time of need. A priest on earth can only pray for you and guide you with very limited knowledge. Jesus is our perfect High Priest forever, not just till death. There will never have to be another high priest for us to go to.
How can this help you today? When you a facing a difficulty you can go to the perfect High Priest for help. We no longer have to go to a priest in a church today. This can encourage you to be strong for Him. This can give you confidence in being able to go before God knowing there is a High Priest with you at all times. Since Jesus also knows everything about you, you do not have to fear going before Him. He already knows every sin you have done, you cannot hide it from Him. Be willing to go before Jesus to confess all your sins each and every time.
I pray that today you will not fear going to Jesus the High Priest; that you will know and understand that Jesus knows all and knows what is best for you every time; that God will fill you with His peace in knowing Jesus is your High Priest forever; and that God will help you become more like Jesus everyday.
