Hebrews 5:8-9 Learning Obedience

“Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered and once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him” Hebrews 5:8-9

Jesus is the Son of God. Unlike many children of high ranked officials, His being the Son of God did not give Him any special privileges or exemptions. Jesus still had to completely fulfill the law and all the requirements of God His Father. Notice that this scripture states that He “learned” obedience. Remember Jesus came to this earth as a baby, not a fully grown, mature man. Everything He did He had to learn as a regular human boy growing up. One of these things was obedience. He had to learn to obey God in everything. The one thing about Jesus is that He never once failed to obey God from His childhood until this day.

How did Jesus learn obedience? It was through suffering. It was never easy for Jesus to do the things He had to do, or not do certain things. Remember when Lazarus died and the disciples told Him He could have been there to heal him, but Jesus said it was for their benefit He was not there. Jesus cried when He heard that Lazarus had died. Jesus then did a larger miracle of raising the dead. He had to be obedient to the Father to do what was best for everyone.

In being obedient, even to the point of death on a cross, God raised Jesus up to become the source of salvation in all who obeyed Him. Jesus had the highest position of honor because of His obedience to the Father.

Notice that this salvation is for all who obey Him. Many people will state that they know Jesus, but only few will actually obey Him. Jesus said that many would call Him Lord, but He would not recognize them because they did not obey Him.

Today are you obeying Jesus? Are you obeying all the commands of the Father? Or do you pick and choose which commands you will follow and which not to follow? Are you listening for the Father’s voice to tell you what to do in every situation of your life? Or are you crowding God out with your own ways of doing things?

I pray that today you will learn to obey God in everything He says; that you will open your ears to hear what God has to say; that you will have no fear in doing everything God tells you to do; and that you will not allow yourself to be led astray by false teachings and guidance.
