Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way. Proverbs 4:14-15
There are many different paths in life for a person to take. It is most common for a person to take the path that the most people have taken.
Choosing that path is easy because it goes with the flow, it does not create ripples or hardships and there are others on that same path. It appears to be the best path because many others are on it.
Solomon says that one should not set foot on the path of the wicked at all. One should avoid it at all costs and go another direction.
The path that the majority of people take in this world is one of selfishness and sin. It is usually a path that goes against God and leads one into more sin. The paths are ones of hatred, vengeance, greed, violence, pride, gossip, jealousy, and more.
There are many ‘believers’ who are taking the path of those in the world, the path of the wicked. They choose to watch, listen or do sinful things, because that is what every one else is doing. Often they do it with the claim that they are free in Christ and not bound by the law.
Jesus did not die to allow a person to sin more, but to free him from the bondage of sin’s punishment. It is to free the believer from continuing to sin on purpose. He has given a new path to walk on that is narrow and straight and leads to life and victory in love, grace and mercy.
Turning towards sin and accepting it as a part of life is to deny Christ and what He has done. The believer must avoid all paths of sin and run the other way, flee temptation.
The world will strive to get you to walk on their path. They will make it look and sound good for you. Avoid it, run from it. Avoid walking in any type of evil or sin.
God’s path for you has true life. It may be narrow and difficult, but it is full of life, leading to eternal life. Do not walk it to earn your salvation, but because you are saved. Walk it to thank God for what He has done for you. This is not to be done out of legalism, but out of love for God.
I pray today that you will know the path God has for you; that God will reveal to you paths that are wicked; that God will guide you from paths of the wicked; and that God will give you strength to avoid sinful paths.
If you return to the LORD, then your fellow Israelites and your children will be shown compassion by their captors and will return to this land, for the LORD your God is gracious and compassionate. He will not turn his face from you if you return to him. 2 Chronicles 30:9
Walking away from something good is an easy thing to do. There are times when something looks better and so people choose to change directions and follow the new thing.
In the process of choosing the new direction, sometimes people make a mistake. Afterwards they realize that they chose the wrong direction and in the process hurt someone else. With people this can often be detrimental. When a person is hurt badly, they often write off the person and do not want the person back.
Fear keeps many people from returning. They feel if they return they will be rejected or punished harshly and not accepted.
As Hezekiah was leading the nation back to God, he chose to reinstate the Passover celebration. He told all the people to return to God, because He was gracious and compassionate. God would not reject them, but would accept them back, regardless of what they had done.
Many people have followed God at one point in their life. They then made some mistakes and fell into some sin. At that point they walk away from God, feeling as though they can no longer serve Him. They choose to not go back out of pride and fear of God.
They realize what they did was wrong and feel as though God cannot forgive them and will not accept them back. They do not want to be rejected, so they stay away.
However God is a loving and compassionate God. He is waiting for every person to turn to Him, even if it is again for the tenth time or more. He is willing to forgive and move on.
You may have made some mistakes in your life and walked away or drifted away from God. Drop the pride and return to God. He is waiting for your return with wide open arms of love and forgiveness.
There is nothing you can do or have done to stop God from loving you. He will always run to you when you run towards Him. Unlike the world, He will quickly forgive and restore you.
If you have walked away, quickly return today and be accepted.
I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will turn your heart to God; that you will know God’s great love for you; that you will experience His grace and compassion; and that you will live your life for God.
Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison. Deuteronomy 29:18
In this world there are many different gods to worship and follow. There are many different religions that people all around the world are willing to follow. Some are following direct gods, while others are just beliefs of this world and not following anything but self.
Over the years there have been many people who have turned away from God and turned to one or more of these gods that others follow. Their hearts have strayed away from God. This is not something that just happened one day, it was a process over some time.
Moses had given the people a charge to make sure no one turned their hearts away from God to a false god of the nations. They were not to allow any root to begin to grow that would allow this poison in their lives.
Roots begin to grow in the heart of a person who is not staying in God’s word or is meeting together with other believers on a regular basis. There is no one to help keep the person accountable. They begin to see other beliefs and begin to believe them, rather than God’s word. As that root grows in their hearts, they begin to turn away from God.
Every believer is to keep an eye on his fellow believer, helping keep each other focused on God. This will keep roots of discontent and false belief to rise up in the heart. Daily love and fellowship with believers and God, will keep one from turning away from God to false gods.
You may be a believer who is becoming discontent and are starting to believe in other false gods. Turn your eyes back onto God. Remember what had brought you to God in the first place and stay with God.
As you follow God, help your fellow believers to stay with God. Do not allow any roots of discontent or false belief to rise up. Worship God together and keep Him at the forefront of your lives.
Do not allow yourself or anyone else to walk away from God. Keep the roots of poison out of your lives as you walk with God.
I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that God will keep you from being poisoned by false beliefs; that you will strive to keep others focused on God; and that God will open your eyes to roots leading you or others astray from Him.
Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. Deuteronomy 11:16
When traveling down a road on a longer trip, there are often many warning signs on the road. There are warnings of sharper curves, workmen on the road, speed limit changes, narrow roads or bridges, extra wide vehicles, low bridges, stop signs, crossing traffic, and many other warnings. These are placed on the road to help prevent an accident.
As a person travels down the road, he can be tempted to drive faster and ignore the warning signs. The temptation to follow what others are doing increases the desire to ignore the signs. Yet, those signs are there for a purpose, to keep the person safe from harm.
As the Israelites were getting ready to go into the new land of Canaan, they were warned about being careful of being enticed to follow false gods. The pressure to follow them would be great.
Traveling through this life has many different paths that people travel. All but one path leads to death and destruction. Only when a person follows the path laid out by Jesus, can a he gain life.
The world will throw everything it can towards the believer to get him to follow anyone or thing except Jesus. They try to make the false gods look good.
In today’s society, it not usually a physical idol that they worship, but other things or self. Currently, there are many that believe no matter what religious belief a person he has, he can still get to heaven. Or they push the idea Jesus is not real, and one can be anything he wants to be on his own, and it is acceptable.
The only way you, as a believer, can keep from falling for these false beliefs is to be careful and alert. You must keep a close eye on the path for warning signs that there is danger ahead. Being filled with God’s Holy Spirit will help you be careful not to be enticed into believing some false god. He will keep you on the path God has for you.
You must keep your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith, so that when the temptation to turn away from God comes, and it will, you will not be led astray. Be careful to follow God with all of your heart, mind, soul and strength.
I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will not be led away from God to false beliefs; that the Holy Spirit will guide your steps in following Jesus; and that you will worship and serve God alone.
