Exodus 13:21 The Perfect GPS

map

By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light so that they could travel by day or night. Exodus 13:21

Traveling through an unknown area can be challenging. This becomes even more true when there is no direct road to take. The challenge becomes even much harder when there is no map to follow. Then a person must add on traveling through an area with very few people and no towns or cities. Traveling becomes almost impossible.

This is the type of traveling the Israelites had to go through when they left Egypt. They really didn’t know where they were going or how to get there.

Going through life is not a whole lot different then the Israelites traveling through the wilderness. No person really knows the path to take. There are too many different possibilities and too many different paths. At any moment the time to turn could come up. A person needs to be guided as to how to make it through this life.

Often people turn to others who have made the path to determine how to make it themselves. They seek advice from other people, which may be correct or incorrect. It may work or it may not.

God had chosen to lead the Israelites through the desert. He showed up as a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night. He let them know when to start moving and when to stop, when to turn and when to go straight. This occurred 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All they had to do was look up and know where to go next in their lives.

Things have not changed since the Israelites have left, except God no longer uses a pillar of cloud or fire to lead a person. As a believer you can have God’s Holy Spirit guide you through this life. He now lives in you and is with you to guide you through this life.

God is willing to show you the path to take that is the best path to take. He will never steer you wrong. At any moment in your life God will let you know when to move, stop, or make a turn.

All you need to do is allow Him to guide you. Is God your guide?

I pray today that you will know God’s Holy Spirit in your life; that you will listen to God’s guidance; that you will walk the path God has for you; and that you will follow God all the days of  your life.

Jeremiah 31:21 Set Up Road Signs

“Set up road signs; put up guideposts. Take note of the highway, the road that you take. Return, Virgin Israel, return to your towns.” Jeremiah 31:21

Israel had been scattered as a nation to other nations. They were exiled from their homeland. As this occurred, God had stated that He would bring them back to their land. As God called them back, He wanted them to set up signs and guides along the way to point the way back home. There would be many who had never lived in the homeland and would not know the direction to go, with the signs it would guide them to the correct path home.

Every person that drives down a road, traveling to some place, always needs signs to guide them. Without the signs it would make it very difficult to find where one is going. Without signs, one may think he got to where he was going, but could be in the totally wrong location. Think about Christopher Columbus. He tried to make it to India, but landed in Central America.

Along side the signposts, one was also to put up guideposts. On mountain roads there are guideposts to let a person know where the edge of the road is. They are there to protect a person from going off of the road and getting into danger.

As a Christian, you have been down a road that many have never taken yet. That is the road to salvation through Jesus. When you started to believe in Jesus and accept His forgiveness of your sins, you had made it back home to God. You are living in a new place with a new life, that many do not know.

Jesus told all believers to be His witness in this world. Just as the Israelites were to set up road signs and guideposts on the way back home, so you must set up signs and guideposts for others to see the path home.

Being a witness of who Jesus is and what He has to offer are the road signs to eternal life that every person needs to hear and see. Showing grace, mercy, forgiveness and love are the guideposts that keep a person from straying back off the path to God.

Are you willing to set up road signs and guideposts so that others may make the journey home to God? Set them up today.

I pray today know the path to God in your own life; that you will show the path to Jesus to others; that you will be a witness of who Jesus is to the world around you; and that you will bring many others home to God with you.

Going On Vacation

Today I am leaving for a few days on a trip of a lifetime. One of my sons and I are going on a Jesus Freak cruise with the Christian band DC Talk.

For those of you who may not know who that band is, they were a very big Christian band in the 80s-90s. They quit singing as a band in the mid-90s. Each of the three members of the band went on to sing on their own or with another band. Toby Mac sings on his own, and Michael Tate is now lead singer for the band Newsboys.

They are getting together for the first time since they separated as a band for a one week series of concerts. The exciting thing about this series of concerts is that it is on a cruise from Miami to the Bahamas. There will be many other singers and bands on the cruise.

I have always dreamed of going on a cruise and I love to visit other countries. I have never been to the Bahamas, so it will be a new country to add to the list. And as for a cruise, this will be great because it is a Christian based cruise. There should be very little to no alcohol, and definitely no drunk partying on this cruise. Most cruises I have looked at in the past include both those things, which I do not personally agree with or want to be around.

The reason I am telling you what I am doing is that I will not have internet available while I am gone. I have already set up posts to show up each day, so there will be no break in the devotions or other things that I like to post. During this time, however, if you make any comments I will not be able to moderate them until I get back.

Please feel free to make comments. I enjoy knowing what your thoughts are on the different posts that God leads me to write. When I get back I will be sure to read, moderate them, and respond to every post.

I trust God is blessing you with these posts and you are drawing closer to Him each time you read one. I trust that you are reading the Bible more as you follow my posts.

Thank you for reading my posts and being faithful to God. I will be online next Sunday.

Proverbs 16:9 Planning And The Actual Journey

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps. Proverbs 16:9

Plans for traveling are made by people all the time. In the process of planning a major trip across the country, many decisions are made. Where to get gas, where to eat, where to stop for the night, which roads to take, and where to stop for a visit are just a few of the plans made.

These decisions are based off of many different reasons that each person must make for the trip being made. Cost factors, time to drive, distance, what the goal is, and other individual choices have to be made.

Once on the road, however, changes in the plans can easily occur. Vehicle break down, traffic accident, bad weather, and other incidents could occur that change the plans without personal desire.

In the same way, plans are made by people to travel through life. Plans to live in a certain area, or work a specific job, or get a type of college degree and the list goes on indefinitely. A lot of these start out when the person is in high school. Others are made later in life.

Very often those plans get changed, often due to circumstances beyond the control of the person. God will step into the picture and guide the person’s steps through this life. One plan that no person personally chooses is to have trouble or pain. Everyone wants to avoid all trouble if possible.

Yet, it is trouble that can help build a person stronger. God uses everything to build a person more like Jesus.

In your own life, God may have to use some trouble in order to get you to move to a new location in order to bring you a greater blessing. In the new location you may be able to do twice as much for God.

As you go through this life, you can make plans, but hold them loosely in your hands. Allow God to change them for your benefit. Allow God to establish your steps on the best path for the greatest journey through this life that is possible.

Trust God’s plans for your life, they will be the best. Your journey may not turn out as you planned, but it will be the best.

I pray today that you will know God’s guidance for your life; that you will stay on the path God wants you on; that you will not lose faith when God changes your plans; and that you will know and live the abundant life God has for you.

Psalm 84:5 Just Traveling Through

Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. Psalm 84:5

Traveling a short distance, less than one-hundred miles, is something that is relatively easy to do. Going a thousand miles or more, is more challenging. Traveling across country, over the ocean to another country, takes a good amount of planning.

Going that kind of distance takes a dedication to see it through. Even though today, a person can fly nearly anywhere in the world and be there within one day, it still takes good planning to do so.

During the times when this psalm was written, everyone traveled on foot or camel back. The process of traveling was very slow. Just traveling across the nation of Israel was a three to four-day trip, if not longer. A person had to have his heart set on making that pilgrimage.

Although physical travel has become much easier, there is a pilgrimage that people must make that takes time and focus. That pilgrimage is the journey through this life. The world is seeking to make themselves better and have all that they want in peace and comfort. It is a journey that they will never complete.

Believers in Jesus, however, also are on a pilgrimage through this life. They are on the journey to become more like Jesus. They are focused on doing what God wants and when He wants it.

Just as a traveler on the road faces various challenges when going down the road, so will every believer in his walk with Jesus. There will be potholes in the road, detours, accidents, and bad weather as well as smooth traveling on this journey in life.

These challenges for a believer are found in persecution, ridicule, fear, illness, death, pain, as well as victory and joy.

The only way to complete the journey is to stay focused on completing it. Do not allow yourself to be turned aside and quit the journey. As you set your heart on the journey God has given you, He will give you the needed strength to complete it.

You are just traveling through this life to get to eternity with God. Don’t stop now, but finish the journey. It will be worth it in the end.

I pray today that God will reveal His path for you; that God will strengthen you for the journey; that you will find joy in your journey; that you will see progress in your journey with God; and that you will finish the journey God has you on.
