“One day the evil spirit answered them, Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Acts 19:15
Paul had been going around doing many miracles in the name of Jesus. Seven sons of a priest decided that they would try to do the same thing. They went to a person who was demon possessed and would attempt to cast out the demons using the name of Jesus. One of the spirits rebelled against them. The spirit knew Jesus, and knew about Paul, but did not know anything about these men. The demonic spirit then beat those men.
Very often as people see miracles being done by a believer they hear the words said, or see the actions done and believe that is the way to get a miracle. Although the miracle may have been done through the person using those words, those words had nothing to do with it.
God is the one who does all the healing and any other miracles. It is not the person or their words that did it.
Then a lot of believers will state “in the name of Jesus” in all of their prayers, expecting a miracle or an answer. These are just words, unless the heart is in alignment with Jesus and His desires.
The demonic world knows who Jesus is. They may also hear about believers who are truly sold out to Jesus and following Him.
If a believer is not following Jesus with all of his heart, the demonic world is going to ignore you. You will have no power or authority.
The world will look at you and see you for who you really are. You may claim to be a Christian, but is your life following your words? Are you living as Jesus would, or are you just going through the motions?
If the demons were to ask who you are, what could you say? Will they see Jesus in you?
You may never be asked this question by demons, but you have a good chance the world will ask it someday. What will your answer be? Who are you? Are you a follower of Jesus? Or someone just claiming to follow Jesus?
I pray today that you follow Jesus with all of your heart and life; that you will know Jesus more; that you will act in the desires of Jesus; that the world will know you are a follower of Jesus; and that Jesus will work through you to reach the lost.
“Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are–the Holy One of God!” Mark 1:23-24
Jesus had been in the synagogue teaching the people. Many people were there and were all amazed at His teaching. He taught differently from the other teachers. He taught with authority, not just repeating learned information.
Then a man comes up who is demon possessed and calls Jesus out. The demons in this man knew who Jesus really was. They knew where His authority came from and were afraid of Him. They knew that Jesus had the power to destroy them.
Today many people recognize Jesus as a good man, a good teacher, or even a good prophet. Muslims, who hate Christianity, even recognize Jesus as a good teacher. The difference is that is all that they believe about Jesus. They do not see Him as anything more than just a person who was good at something.
Even in the church there are many who do not see Jesus as to who He really is. Many children growing up following Jesus as the person their parents believed in. Many believe in Jesus, just because it is the thing they were expected to do by their parents or friends.
Often people go to church only as a duty, not out of a relationship with Jesus.
You need to see Jesus as more than just a good teacher, or someone you are just to believe in. He is the Holy One of God. He is God in the flesh. Jesus is the One who created everything and has the power to destroy everything.
Jesus wants a relationship with you. Yes, Jesus has the power to destroy you, but He wants to save you and build you up. Jesus came to take away your sins and bring you to God. He is not out to cut you down.
You need to have a relationship with Jesus and share that with others. Let other people know who Jesus really is. Do not be afraid to speak of Him.
I pray today that God will reveal more of who Jesus is to you; that you will have a relationship with Jesus; that you will find it a joy to walk and talk with Jesus; that you will not fear Jesus; and that God will build His kingdom through you.
“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4
At the beginning of this chapter, John tells you that whoever acknowledges that Jesus has come in the flesh is from God. This is recognizing that Jesus is the Messiah, the Savior.
Now that you recognize this in your own life, you are from God. In today’s verse, John tells you that you have overcome them.
Who is this “them”? These are the spirits and people who are in the world that do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah. Everywhere you go, everywhere you look you will see people who do not believe in Jesus. Along with the people are the customs and ways that do not teach Jesus as the Savior of the world.
If you are living for God, all these spirits and people are against you. They may seem like a friend, but in the end they will try to destroy you because you do not believe as they do. The world does not want anything to do with Jesus as the Messiah.
Now comes the question of what does it mean to “overcome”? You will not be defeated. They cannot destroy you. At most, they may kill your body, but your soul is safely I God’s hands. Their lies and deception will not be able to harm you.
Can you do this in your own power? No. It is only because Jesus is in you. His Holy Spirit is living in you. God does the work of overcoming in and through you.
In yourself, you would be destroyed in an instant going up against the evil spirits of this world. You are nothing without God. God has absolute power and control in everything. No one or nothing can touch you without permission from God.
Trust in God to protect you in this world. Seek His guidance and power to overcome the spirits of this world. Do not give in to the ways of this world. Be an overcomer. Stand strong in His power and might. You will win with God.
I pray that today God will fill you with His Holy Spirit; that God will give you His strength and guidance to overcome the world; that you will not give into the ways of this world; that God will remove fear of being overcome by the world; and that God will do mighty things in and through you.
