Isaiah 42:20 Not Paying Attention

You have seen many things, but you pay no attention; your ears are open, but you do not listen. Isaiah 42:20

God was talking to the Israelites when He made this statement. They had seen God do many miracles, they had heard the law read to them time and time again, and they heard what the prophets were saying. They knew what God wanted, yet they still rejected Him and chose to follow idols instead. The Israelites were unwilling to really see what was happening or hear what was being said.

It is very easy for a person to see what is happening and not really see what is happening. They will only see on the surface or they will ignore the signs. How many people drive down the road and ignore some of the signs? The speed limit is lowered with signs telling the driver to slow down, yet he does not slow down. Suddenly he is stopped by the police and given a ticket for speeding, all because he did not pay attention to the signs in front of him.

Many believers go to church every Sunday morning and hear the pastor preach God’s word to them. They hear the words of God, but are not really listening. As they sit in the chair ‘listening’ they are thinking about going fishing or shopping,  or the meal that day. When the service gets out, many will say it was a great sermon, but very few can tell what it was really about. They were listening without hearing.

God is speaking and doing things all the time. You must be willing to see and hear what He is up to. Jesus spoke of many signs of the times. As you go through life are you seeing those signs?

Those signs may be that a person is ready to hear about Jesus; or not to go down a path that is one of destruction; or maybe a warning of persecution about to come. God will not leave you in the dark, if you are willing to watch and listen. He will show you great things, but you must be willing to see them. He will tell you great things, but you must be willing to hear them.

Are you really listening?

Are you really seeing?

I pray today that you will have your spiritual eyes and ears open to what God is showing and saying; that you will be aware of what is happening around you in the spiritual realm; and that you will pay attention to what God is saying and doing in and around you.

Psalm 74:9 When God Is Quiet

We are given no signs from God; no prophets are left, and none of us knows how long this will be. Psalm 74:9

Silence is a difficult thing for many people. There are many who can remain silent themselves, but very few can handle silence around them.

When there is a speaker talking to a group of people, and that speaker stops talking for just fifteen seconds, many start to wonder what went wrong. They wonder why he stopped speaking. Yet, it was only for a few seconds.

This is a common thing for churches. When a pastor stops speaking for a few seconds, many start praying, thinking he lost his way or notes, when it could have been intentional.

People like to keep hearing what is going on. They want to see signs that things are still moving forward. In the same way, when a person is driving down on a long road trip, he wants to see signs that he is getting closer to his destination and is still on the right road.

In the life of a believer, there will be times when God is silent. He will not speak out loud to a person. During those times, many wonder if God has left them and how long God will remain silent. The devil may place thoughts in the mind that God no longer cares about the person.

There may be times when you are feeling like that. You may be going through a time where God is silent right now. Just like with the psalmist in this passage, you must remember what God has done in the past, both for you and for others.

Unless you have totally rejected God, He has not left you. He may be silent, but He is still right by your side. Jesus said that He would never leave you.

Continue to do what God had last told you to do. Give God praise that He is still in control and by your side, though you do not feel or hear Him. When the time is right, God will move you on. There were times God was silent with the Israelites, and He will be silent with you.

Are you trusting God?

Are you waiting on God to move?

I pray today that you will know God’s presence in your life; that you will know God’s will for your life; that you will trust God when He is silent; and that you will remember all that God has done for you in your past.

Ephesians 5:3 No Hint Of Sin

“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.” Ephesians 5:3

Hints are little signs of something that is there. They are meant to point to something in a vague way, but not to be a clear indication of anything. It just shows that something is there or could be there. What they point to are supposed to be a secret and usually a surprise for another person.

Paul lists three things that there should not even be a hint of in a believer’s life. These three are: sexual immorality, impurity, and greed.

The world is open about these things. Nearly every TV show, movie, or song promote in some form or another sexual immorality. They either straight out show sexual immorality or they talk about it as though it is acceptable. Alongside of the sexual immorality is all types of impurities: lying, cheating, stealing, rudeness, disobedience, and the list goes on. Mixed with all of these is greed. People want more and more, and believe you should have it all and more.

Not having a hint of these things is a hard road to walk. Many believers do not purposely live in sexual immorality. Yet, these same ones will watch it, or tell jokes about it. These are hints. What a person watches, a person is thinking about.

Greed comes in the desire for more and more. Many believers want more in the thought that they will be able to give God more. While saying this they are not giving much of what they have, barely their tithe. Their thoughts are based in personal greed.

Take a look at your life. Are there any hints of these things in your life? What do you do? What do you think about?

Hints can pop up anywhere. If you were tried in a court that could know and see all, would you be found guilty? God sees and knows everything. Nothing is hidden from him. To Him it is not a hint but direct fact. To people they are hints. Jesus died so that you could live a holy, sinless life.

Ask God to help you remove all hints of all sin in your life. Be the holy person of God that God wants you to be and Jesus can make you.

I pray today that you will ask Jesus to remove all sin from your life; that you will turn away from all sin; that your life will be pure in Jesus; and that you will be a shining light of Jesus.

John 4:48 Believing Without Miracles

“Unless you people see signs and wonders, Jesus told him, you will never believe.” John 4:48

Jesus was back in the town of Cana where He had turned water into wine. One of the royal officials had a son who was sick and dying. He begged Jesus to heal his son. At this point Jesus talks about their searching for signs and wonders in order to believe. He does heal the man’s son, and the man does start following Jesus.

Many people are searching for miracles. They want to see something visibly happen before they will believe in Jesus. They choose not to believe unless they see some type of miracle.

Some have prayed to God believing in God for a miraculous healing of a loved one. When that person dies, the person gives up on God saying He must not be real or not loving because He let that loved one die.

Although God does give signs and wonders, you should not be searching for them. Allow God to bring them to you. You can ask God to bring about that miracle, but don’t base your belief in Him off of whether that miracle occurs or not.

If you want a sign or wonder just look around you. All of creation is a miracle in itself. The stars and planets are a wonder. Life, itself, is a miracle. All of these things point to a God and a God who loves and cares for you. He wants to be involved in your life.

Any more signs and wonders being requested could be a sign of selfishness. Look in the Bible and read of the miracles there. Listen to the testimonies of others. These should be enough for you to believe in God.

Once you believe in God and are truly following Jesus, it is acceptable to ask for more miracles. Miracles should not be the basis of your belief. What will happen to your belief when God chooses not to do a miracle? Will you stop believing?

Believe in Jesus today. He has always been faithful and true. He will not fail you.

I pray today that you will believe Jesus for who He is; that you will not need miracles in order to believe; that you will see the miracles of all of creation; that you will tell of the miracles in your life to others; and that God will use you to build His kingdom.

Luke 16:31 Unwilling to Believe

“He said to him, If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.” Luke 16:31

Jesus told a story of Lazarus and a rich man, who both died. Lazarus went to heaven, while the rich man went to hell. The rich man asked that Lazarus be allowed to warn his brothers about what happens after death. He was told that his brothers had Moses and Prophets to listen to and they would not believe a person from the dead.

It is very common for people to ask for a miraculous sign from God in order to believe. Often they state “if God would just do…., I would believe”. Jesus had to deal with this Himself when He walked among the people. He even had to deal with it right up to the point of His death on the cross.

When a person demands a miraculous sign from God, he is putting himself as the one in control, and not really allowing God to be in control. There is no faith in that.

Jesus had risen from the dead and, yet, many people still refused to believe in Him. The leaders even spread lies of His body being stolen, though no body was ever found anywhere.

Look all around you and see the miracles of every day life. Where did everything come from? How does everything work the way it does? These are all signs of God.

Read God’s Word and it tells you what is required of you. Now, you must believe it. Don’t allow yourself to fall into the trap of wanting more miraculous signs. Don’t try to provide miraculous signs to unbelievers who refuse to believe.

God provides miracles to add to your faith you already have. They are not there to start your faith in Him.

Believe God’s Word today. Let others know what God is saying also.

I pray today that you will believe God today; that you will not need to see miracles to believe in God; that you will know all of God’s Word; and that God will use you to build His kingdom.

Mark 8:11-12 Wrong Reasons for Signs

“The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. He sighed deeply and said, Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given it.” Mark 8:11-12

Everyday Jesus was out teaching and performing many miracles. Thousands of people were coming to Him and talking about these miracles. They saw these miracles as signs from God.

Now the Pharisees come and ask for a sign. Their purpose was not to believe in Jesus, but to try to prove that He was a false teacher/prophet. They did not believe that Jesus was from God. If Jesus could not give the sign, than they would have their proof that He was not real.

One who believes in Jesus, must do so on faith. Faith is believing without physically seeing. It is believing when there is nothing in the natural to give you reason to believe.

Many people will ask for a sign like the Pharisees did. They really don’t believe in Jesus, but want some kind of proof that He is false. If the sign doesn’t happen, then Jesus was not real.

This is a different asking for a sign, then what the believer will ask. When a believer asks for a sign, he has already heard from God and just wants a confirmation that He heard correctly. He believes what God has said.

Jesus had stated that there would be many signs and that you must watch for them. If you are led by God’s Holy Spirit, you will see and understand those signs. You will not need any more signs from God.

Why do you ask for a sign from God? Is it out of unbelief, or from belief? God wants to build your faith in Him. He will use signs to do that, but you must be willing to accept them. You must also be willing to accept God’s choice to not show signs at times, and still trust Him.

I pray today that God will open your eyes to what He is doing; that you will see the signs that God is showing; that you will not test God to prove Him wrong; that you will walk with God in faith; and that God will build your faith in Him.
