Psalm 118:18 Open Eyes

Boy looking on bridge

Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law. Psalm 118:18

The law is something that tells a person what he can or cannot do. It is often seen as stifling or constricting upon a person. Very few people like to have laws made that are set ‘against’ them. It is acceptable for laws that are for the other person or to protect oneself, but not against oneself.

People like their freedom to do what they want, when they want, and how they want with no one to tell them anything different. So because of this, laws are often disposed or ignored. They do not see any or little value in the laws that are made.

In this psalm, the writer asks God to open his eyes up to the wonderful things in His law.

Just as many in the world do not like laws or rules, there are many believers who do not like the commands and laws of God. All they want is the freedom that is pronounced in Jesus. They are quick to point out that God is full of grace and mercy and that there is freedom. This is done to justify their sinful nature.

Since God is perfect and holy in all that He says and does, His law is also perfect. God put the law in place for a purpose. It was for the benefit of all people.

Following the law of God will not save a person, but it shows how a person is to live for God. Jesus fulfilled the law in providing the perfect sacrifice to save a person, but He did not abolish it. It is still there to guide a person on how he should think, speak and act in this fallen world.

The eyes of a believer need to be opened up by God’s Holy Spirit to reveal how great His law is, to be able to see the value in God’s law in this world.

Do not despise God’s law or reject it as old and of no value. Seek God’s word and see the value in what God had to say. Find out why the law was put into place and how you can apply it to your life to live a life that God wants you to live.

Trust in Jesus for your salvation, but live following God’s ways and commands. His law is perfect for how to live this life.

I pray today that God will reveal His law to you; that you will open your heart to seeing God’s law for you; that you will trust in Jesus for your salvation; and that you will live according to the commands of God.

Psalm 119:18 Open Eyes

Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law. Psalm 119:18

Seeing the details in things is difficult for many people. There is often the joke of the husband not knowing the details of his wife. The wife makes a change in the way she does her hair, and the husband does not know the difference. Many men, after several years of marriage, forget the little details of their first date, such as when, where, and what they did.

Others have trained themselves to be extremely attentive to the details. They make great investigators.

The psalmist had asked God to open his eyes to see His law better. At the time of the psalmist, the Law was the Bible. It was the first five books of the Bible as it is known today.

Most people in the church can tell many of the stories of the Bible, such as that of David and Goliath, Noah, Jonah, Lazarus, and the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus. It is great to know these stories, but there is so much more to the Bible. There are many more great things in the Bible that can be known.

When people read the Bible, many get bored with reading the books of Numbers and Chronicles. They see one as just an extremely long list of numbering people and sacrifices, and the other as a long list of genealogies. Both of which are seen as boring.

Yet, in both of these, and throughout the rest of Scripture are a lot of wonderful truths that God has put in there for you to see. The only way to see is to have your eyes opened up to see the details.

Jesus had talked about the people seeing, but not seeing. This is where you need to ask God to help you see correctly.

When you see the Bible as God wants you to see it, you will be filled with wonder and joy at what is in it. The Bible will come alive and not be some boring book that you must read. You will see God’s love and plan for you and all of mankind. You will see how God works in the lives of men and women throughout all history.

Allow God to open your eyes to His Word today and see the wonderful things in it.

I pray today that God will fill you with His Spirit to understand His Word; that God will open your eyes to see His truth; that you will find joy in God’s Word; and that you will be changed by God’s Word.

2 Kings 6:17 Open Eyes

And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, LORD, so that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 2 Kings 6:17

The king of Aramea was trying to attack the Israelites. Every time he made a plan, God revealed that plan to Elisha, who then revealed it to the Israelites. The king of Aramea then sent an army out to kill Elisha. Elisha’s servant saw the army coming and was scared because there were so many. He told his servant not to be afraid because there were more with him then with the enemy and asked God to open his eyes. Once his eyes were open, he could see a large host of chariots of fire all around them.

It is easy for a person to think that there is more of the enemy than of friendly people. This becomes especially true when you look at enemies of Christians. Very few, if any, nations, as a whole, are Christian and serve God. All around sin is promoted openly and freely as the best way to live.

Often, many Christians feel like they are the only believers in their workplace. They feel like they are all alone against the devil and those with him.

While it is very true that there is a very large army out there against every follower of Jesus, there are more with the believer. God has legions of angels there by the side of every believer.

As a believer, you also have God and all of His angels on your side. There are many physical enemies and physical friends, but the majority are those not seen, the spiritual enemy and spiritual friends.

The only way you can see your help is with spiritual eyes. God has to open your spiritual eyes to see who is with you. God is with you, along with all the angels of heaven.

When things are looking bad, and the enemy looks like he is going to beat you down and win, open your eyes to who God is and what He can do. God has more angels than there are people on this earth, here to help when needed. God is also more powerful than anyone on or off this earth. He can help you in all of your needs. Trust Him today.

I pray today that God will open your eyes to see His hand in your life; that God will remove your fear of the enemy; that you will trust God in your situations in life; and that God will do miracles in your life.
