Joshua 4:18 Don’t Return To The Wilderness

Closed door

And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and ran at flood stage as before. Joshua 4:18

Returning to an old way of living is often very easy to do. The pathway back to that lifestyle is often not cut off. It is common for people to leave an open door, for the ‘just in case’ situation in their life.

As long as a door or pathway is left open for the former way of life, it is easy to return. The temptation to go back will always be there.

God had provided a miracle of allowing the Israelites to travel on dry ground across the Jordan river during flood stage. As soon as every one had passed across from the desert wilderness into the new land of Canaan, God had put the waters back into place. The pathway back to the wilderness was closed up to never return.

God had brought them into the new land to stay for all time. There was to be no more returning to the past. The past was now gone, only to be remembered of where they had come from. The Israelites were to take over the new land.

There are times in the life of a believer, that God moves him to a new place in life and closes the door behind him for no return. More often, it is the believer who must close that door. He has to make the choice to never go back.

The world loves to keep that door open. They say that a person is that person no matter what changes and can always go back.

However, God says that a person becomes a new creation. Once created new, one should not change back to what he once was.

As you walk forward with God on this path in life, do not try to go back to the old ways or the old location. Always keep your eyes on God, who only moves forward. He never retreats.

Moving forward will always bring you into new and better things. God has great things in store for you. Allow Him to close the doors behind you and don’t look back. The back is old life and is now dead. Move forward.

I pray today that you will see the path God has for you; that God will help you to move forward on His path for you; that you will trust the path God has for you; and that you will allow God to close the doors behind you.

Revelation 3:8 Open Doors

“I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.” Revelation 3:8

The church in Philadelphia had only good words spoken to them. They had been actively serving God, remaining true to His Word and not denying Him in any way. Since they were doing these things, Jesus told them He would give them an open door and protect them.

God is the one who is in absolute control of everything. There is nothing that He cannot do. Anything that God does, no person or being can stop.

Jesus said that He would give them an open door that no one can shut. Although there is nothing to say what that open door was for sure, it appears to be an open door for witnessing and ministry.

Right before He says He will give them an open door, He stated He knew their deeds. The only deeds that God talks positively about are deeds that build His kingdom and honor Him. Any other deeds are of the devil and are not promoted or desired by God.

Since the people were so active in reaching others for God, God would open new doors for them to continue that work. Earlier Jesus had stated that believers were to pray for God to send workers into the field because the fields were ripe for harvest. These are the open doors for believers.

As you go through your days, ask God to open doors for you. Not doors to promote yourself, but to build His kingdom. Doors to honor God. Doors to touch and minister to others.

Jesus came to this earth through a door God opened so that He could touch lives, serve others, and draw many to God. You, as a follower of Jesus, are to do the same things.

As you reach out to other people, as you touch hurting lives, as witness to others, God will continue to open new doors for you. Each door that He opens no one can shut. The world will not like what you are doing, but they cannot stop it.

Are you going through the doors God opens for you?

I pray today that you will see the doors God has opened for you; that you will keep true to His Word; that you will not deny Jesus in any way; and that you will strive to bring others to Jesus.

Revelation 3:7 Open and Closed Doors

“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.” Revelation 3:7

With the church in Philadelphia, Jesus does not have any negative words to say to them. They are being faithful and continued patiently in serving God. He sees that they are tired but still continue on.

Jesus is described as the one who holds the keys to the doors. He opens and shuts doors of His own choosing.

People in the world are constantly looking for open doors for more wealth or fame or power. Some people are continually changing jobs looking for better pay with less work involved.

Connections with others in the business world is very common. Depending on who you know, depends on which doors may be opened to you.

How many times do you look for an open door of opportunity, especially when looking for work? You knock on many doors only to see they are closed to you for some reason or other. Then you knock on a door that opens and you are grateful for the connections that opened that door.

Other times you have an open door and someone else is jealous and tries to close that door on you. Many in the world do not want to see you get ahead of them. They will do all they can to open the door to themselves and close it to you.

In this passage, however, you see that Jesus is the one who controls opening and closing of doors. When He opens a door for you, no enemy or person can close that door. When He shuts that door to you, you will not be able to open it up.

Seek God for direction in what doors to go through. Jesus will daily open doors for opportunity to build His kingdom, be willing to go through them. Do not try to close the doors to building the kingdom of Jesus.

When you have little strength left in you it will be tempting to try to close the door to serving God. Don’t do it. Seek God for strength to continue on.

When God closes the door, don’t waste your energy trying to open it up again. Be willing to move on.

I pray that today God will show you new open doors to build His kingdom; that God will help you know when He has closed a door; that God will renew your strength; and that you will accept the open and closed doors of God.
